Move A River

Move a river for him, he must sail home,
The final journey begins today.
The proud and the strong, how so swiftly gone.
Move a river for him.

Bury him deep in Earth, bury him well.
Ensure that then no one can find him.
Do it by tomorrow and bury our sorrows.
Bury him well in Earth.

Lay his wealth beside him, lay tribute down.
Give him dignity that he deserves.
We mourn for nine days, as is the right way.
Lay his wealth beside him.

And now we must leave him, there must he lie
We must continue and make our way,
But look to the river, where the lillies wither,
Now we must leave him there.

Move a river for him, the riverbed
Must the final resting place become.
So he'll hear your prayers and bring us back there,
To move the river again.

Author notes

This is actually a song I have written in a kind of medieval/Enya/Middle Eastern motifmade for a harmony group, so I'm not sure how it seems poetry-wise. It's a historical little tid-bit about the death of King Alaric, who probably had the most elaborate burial ever known. Personal hero of mine, actually.

I can see this is as a song easily, in fact I read it aloud in a chanty type of way. It's lovely and makes me want to know more about King Alaric.

    Brilliant!

Absolutely wonderful. I really love that time period and the feel that comes from it. I love Enya too, it's too bad I can't hear it put to music. I enjoyed it very much, and the picture is gorgeous!
