For those who have come before,

learned more than you had learned

taught more than you could teach,

experienced that which you have not,

You must follow their footsteps,

but step not upon his shadow!

For his shadow will cover your foot.

Try as you might, you can never walk upon it.

I do like this one 'but step not upon his shadow' - very poignant! I would have like to have seen 'but step not upon his shadow' and 'for his shadow will cover you foot' as the last two lines, but thats just a personal thing. All in all, I think this is excellent

i really like this poem and how its talking about (i think) that we must all lead our own paths, while taking advice from those before us, we need to create our own lives. its really well written and flows nicely. good job and keep writing

Woah... That's short, but... woah. I'm gonna have to ruminate on that one for a while.

The shadow... quite symbolic, there. Nicely done. And yet, I must wonder as to what it could mean. It could mean a lot of things. You seem to have quite the skill for making me think.

Mmm.... thanks. You can never step on a person's shadow; never. The only shadow you will step on is your own. Even if you try to walk in somebody's footsteps (the western version of this poem variation) it's hard to fill their shoes. Does that help any?
