A Certain Immortality

Hours pass, days--the clock
is winding down so rapidly.
Each morning the mirror reminds me
of fast approaching mortality.
Old age stares me in the face--
the only saving grace
is my love of life and poetry.
The music of words still thrills,
their liberating power transporting me
into realms of sheerest ecstasy.
We cannot live forever, but we,
through the gift of poetry,
can achieve a certain immortality.

I think that maybe it should be said that if you can write poetry that can be read and understood by the crowd that there is immortality...so many are taking pen to paper after looking up words in the dictionary that it leaves much to be desired..nicely written

You are absolutely right. The words we have penned will still be here long after we are gone. All the emotions and feelings that we put into them will live on. great job with this one.

This is beautiful, says so little but means so much. I loved these lines, so true:

Each morning the mirror reminds me
    of fast approaching mortality.

We are very mortal but poetry will live long after we die. Great job and good luck in the contest.

    that's how you do it!

this poem is about art, not old age, and it is about joy, not necessarily happiness. it is about everything that the life of the mind can give to the heart. great write, Bad Bill. yes, in many ways, a stunner even. yes. JG

Immortality is within poetry and yet in ourselves through those who love us and carry us in them. I enjoyed this very much. Age is but a number, love is eternal

This could not possibly be more true. It makes me think of all the poets who would have been forgotten if not for their poetry: Emily Dickinson, Tennyson, and others. Very wonderful poem!

    I like to agree...

Poetry gives us a certain immortality...to speak the truth is to say that thought has never crossed my mind and now I am glad it has...aging doesn't seem to phase you because for the rest of your life you will have words...a great gift indeed if you know how to make them speak..great write...I enjoyed this more than the usual poem..
