The Counsel Oak

The Counsel Oak

For hundreds of years this tree has stood
And now I stand
under this wise old tree
The Seminole Chiefs ruled as they could
under this wise old tree

If its branches could talk, the stories we’d hear
Of days long past
under this wise old tree
A proud Seminole nation, its laws passed here
under this wise old tree

From weddings to wars all was decided
under this wise old tree
Never disputed the elders presided
under this wise old tree

Now times have changed the nation is stronger
under this wise old tree
The shade of its branches are needed no longer
under this wise old tree

Hotels and casinos harbor a crowd
because of this wise old tree
A nation has prospered, its people proud
because of this wise old tree

    Merry meet,

Congratulations on winning the Silver. There were not many entries in the contest but they all were really good. Trees hold a special place in my Wiccan religion so I really appreciate the sentiment of this. I just feel that it is too bad the casinos have to be a source of income, not that I object to gambling per se, it's just that are First Americans have so much more to offer if we would only look. Congratulations again on your win.

The repetition of the line "under this wise old tree" adds an interesting flavour to this poem, it makes it sound like a chanting.Splendid!I really enjoyed this poem! Goooood luck in the contest!

This is a wonderful poem, The Council Tree. The wise arboreal guardian, and all the things it must have heard and known, is a great way to give emotion to this poem. Your closing lines are one of pride:

A nation has prospered, its people proud
because of this wise old tree

Very lovely style you have chosen to write this poem, in honor of the Seminole People. I thank you so much for your entry, and wish you good luck in the contest.
