Finding a Smile

I've recently rediscovered
how to laugh-
deep belly sounds
that ache my sides into
little stabs of happy;

searched beneath the worry,
long hours of work
and a dwindling bank account
to find that my smile
crooks at one side,
that eyes really do crinkle
a bit too much
when my lips curl upward.

Given up the stone stare,
looking outward
without ever looking in

to learn the reception
to but a couple
of muscle movements
is more powerful
than all the words I've learned.

S3 is important because it lets us know where you have come from to get to this smile. (regarding your comment below)

      Thank you.

      I rarely hear cute.

I'm not sure about the third stanza, though. I don't know if it fits.

Well, in my humble opinion, I think it fits. The name of the poem is 'Finding a Smile'... If you can find it by looking inward, so be it. It's the first stanza that I think is so friggin' cute!

well I guess thats 31 poems for the month of december.

I liked this, unusually upbeat, and happy. Smiling is a great thing to write about...as in poetry it seems like there is no smiling, iunno,

Nice job and I was wondering, are you going to try the whole one poem for everyday thing again?

    amazing

There is such rich, full language here, a profound sense of depth that reaches into the soul and grabs hold...I love the phrase "little stabs of happy" and will treasure the image it creates within my mind. This is so profound in its simplicity as well; the smile is so powerful - reaching beyond all languages. Blessings and best wishes have a wonderful new year. ~richard

LOL I've hardly ever heard 'great title' in response to something I've come up with. That's a nice change.

Also more powerful than any picture you can paint - the poem. Like the way the smile brings us into the stream of life - flowing inwards and outwards - this is brought out - also great in terms of a winter poem if the old man would freeze up already.
