Resurrection

“You can’t find this kind of lovin’ cheap anymore.”

Who the hell do you think you are
Trying to sell me your stories
Like you know what I think about
Like you’ve got something for me
You can’t stomp me out into ash
You’ll only see me rise again
The phoenix flying over you
Soaring high above your head.

“You won’t get anywhere without me.”

Who the hell do you think you are
Telling me what I will become
Some things cannot be measured
Wait until all is said and done
Because I can wash the past away
Until no one can see the stains
No one will know you touched me
No part of you will remain.

“You’re so cute when you threaten me like that.”

Who the hell do you think I am
Someone who needs your every breath
To have something to believe in
Like you’re the only one left
Well, let me tell you something, baby
The road stretches wide before me
And I’m never turning back for you
So you might as well ignore me.

Author notes

This is just a random, weird, experimental sort of thing I wrote today. The formatting is different from the things I usually write, but I think it works out OK. In case there's any confusion, the quotations are meant to be someone else speaking to me, and the stanzas are my responses.

Essentially, it's about leaving a bad situation, because you know you don't deserve what's being done to you. It's about embodying the phoenix, and rising out of the ash to fly again, above it all.

It wasn't really inspired by anything in my personal life. I had just finished reading "White Oleander" (a great book by Janet Fitch, I highly recommend it), and was thinking about how amazing it was that the protagonist was finally able to break free of the world her mother had unfairly created for her. And then I was thinking about how she resembled the myth of the phoenix, and it got me to thinking about the lyrics of "32 Flavors" (a song by Ani Difranco, also highly recommended), and this just sort of popped out from there. "White Oleander" was the main inspiration for this piece, but I think it was also a bit of a subconscious "fuck you" to my own parents (how cliche). I have struggled for a long time to break free of some of the things they have put me through.

Any input (other than meaningless flames) would be greatly appreciated. As I said, this is different from my usual stuff, so I'd like to know what you think.

Please tell me what you think

--you tell 'em and you tell 'em good. I like the format and how the stanzas are like answers to the quoted parts. I'm also a fan of the rhyme ... not straight for the most part. I'm not sure what else to tell you but I enjoyed it.

And 32 Flavours is a good song. Ani is a musical genius.
