Loved and Lost.

Some people say that
it is better to have loved and lost,
than to never have loved at all.
It makes one think that they
have never lost anyone
that they hold dear to their heart.
Smelling the carnage of my village
as bandits burn it to the ground.
The cries of those brave few
who stood, left dieing on the ground.
I race around the remains
of our once healthy village.
Looking, searching in vain
for her, the girl who
would be my wife in
just a few short days.
I find her, sprawled across
a charred beam. Lifeless and still.
She does not move,
her breast not rising with breath.
So peaceful her face looks,
eyes closed,
almost cherubic innocence upon her
pale and lifeless face.
Dropping to my knees
in the mud and the blood,
taking her head in my lap.
Tears flowing from a shattered heart.
So, you it is better to have loved
and lost, then never to have loved?
Have you ever lost?
Do you know the searing dull ache
that follows such a loss?

It seems to me that the meaning of the old saw about love and loss

is that we all at sometime we will experience such a loss, given that our love ones are mortal but that to not have the capacity to love is much worse, because such an existence would be absolutely sterile. To chose such an existence for fear of pain is a no win situation. Living fully takes courage. One goes on knowing it will hurt but is worth the effort to rise again and over come.

I too agree with this message. For if I have never known love, how could I hurt upon not having what I do not know of? Only in knowing and losing love can one fully understand what pain there is within one's hear tthen. No I agree, I would rather not know love than having fully embraced it, lost it and having to suffer from the pain of such a loss. Wonderfully unique and good luck in the contest.

This is so moving...it doesn't seem to matter
that this is "fantasy" because it can translate
(and does) so well into our own lives. Beautiful
in a sadness I have felt more than once...

    Love to you, Lane

thank you, Love. This one is one of my favorites. Another of my favorites, is Finally With You. (this poem is the begining of a series, by the way) Thanks for the comments, and the applause.

I love this! It is so dramatic your scene, proving the question wrong...it is not better to love and lost! A very creative work! Full of emotion, and drama..I like your looking into years and years past, and you being the main character, and your love the victim...Sad, but still real today..isn't it..people losing their loves....Wonderful write!

It's a very contradicting phrase as you have put above. I like the fantasy aspect of the poem. Kinda sad, I felt like crying. Not many poems make me do that. Descriptive? Yes. It reminded me of my poem called If I Lost You Today. I'm such a pessimist, and I hate it. I always fear for the worst and then I get paranoid about the future. I'm just grateful for the time that we spend together. I have to make each second count.
