Twenty-four Karat Poem

Because I didn’t have money for a diamond ring
And couldn’t buy twenty-four karat gold for you to wear
Even though I would wrap all the rubies in the world
And emeralds, and sapphires, all the classic gems
I found something worth more than gold or silver
Fashioned from the finest words, twenty-four karat poem

Friends said diamonds would defeat a poem
Can my heart expand within a golden ring?
Consuming love cannot be contained with cold silver
And they asked me what you’d show off and wear!
“Ah, my gift pursues more sweetness than a gem,”
“Just wait until her smile shakes the world.”

Exceptional words can move mountains, shaping the world
Cryptic they are, even more when in a poem
Ever moving as they may be, sorely lacking are the gems
Brilliantly custom, and accurate to a ring
Drawing a monument of thoughts that just emotions may wear
Every word coated with more value than silver

Eternal words defeat mortal metal, silver
Declaring love that spans across worlds
A man’s love, placid burden to wear
Catered to you, a twenty-four karat poem
It insists far more thought than does a diamond ring
Blessed deeper than are crystalline gems

A simple three words can be the greatest gem
Latently more valuable than is gold, or silver
Far prettier than rubies or a swift diamond ring
A gentle “I Love You” means more than the world
Boldly as I try, it can’t be said in a poem
Because of the laughter, and the smile I wear

A set of words, you may be unable to wear
But the smiles will last longer than the eldest gem
Less money may be consumed in a poem
But more time will be spent than on silver
For you now, my unyielding heart’s deepest world
A few things that cannot be said with a ring

Perhaps I couldn’t buy you a ring to wear
But you are more tempting than all the world’s gems
I love you more than silver, or even a twenty-four karat poem

Author notes

This poem is one I wrote for my significant other for Christmas, it's part of a growing collection.

This particular one is a sestina made even more complex. Excluding the last stanza... if you follow the code A=1, B=2, C=3, etc. the beginning letters of each line in each stanza add up to 24. Furthermore, in stanzas 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6... lines ending in the same word have syllables adding up to 24. On top of that, it follows the original Sestina format, which is already strict enough.
