'Wicked' Retold

"No one mourns the wicked"
Is what the Ozians said
For they were celebrating
That the Wicked Witch was dead

But Glinda the Good had known her
She had known her very well
And when a man accused her of this
Here's the story she chose to tell:

~♥♥♥~

We met at dear old Shiz
Elphaba was her name
Once she became my roommate
Things would never be the same

The headmistress saw talent in her
'And Elphaba was convinced:
"The Wizard and I will be friends someday
And I will be loved 'till the end."

But what is this feeling I felt for her?
It was something I'd never felt
It took a confrontation to realize that
I loathed her like no one else

She befriended a teacher at Shiz
Which I thought was rather odd
But when he disappeared, even I couldn't deny
That something bad was happening in Oz

At a ball, we were dancing through life
And to Fiyero I was the world
But Elphaba got upset, as she liked him too
And whined, "I'm not that girl"

Still, after that we became friends
But someone like me couldn't befriend her
So I gave her a very special treatment
But I failed to make Elphie popular

Madame Morrible sent my friend to see the Wizard
And Elphie said I could come
So we had one short day together
And were best friends before we were done

Elphie didn't like the Wizard at all
Although he said he was a sentimental man
And when she found out he had taken her teacher
It was the beginning of Elphaba's end

She angered the Wizard, and he called his guards
And soon they were chasing us around
We found a safe room, though, and she told me
That they would not bring her down

"I'm defying gravity" she said
"Come with me, Glinda, I beg you
If we decide to work together
There's nothing we cannot do."

"No, dear Elphie, I can't do that,"
I sadly told my friend
"But I hope that we will meet once more
Before out journeys end."

So then we went our separate ways
No knowing what we might find
But one thing we knew for sure
Was that we'd left something dear behind

~♥~

I became a hero to Oz
And Elphaba a person to detest
The Wizard declared me Glinda the Good
And Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West

"Thank goodness for Glinda!" the crowds would cheer
"She'll always be there for us!"
But I didn't feel so wonderful
Because I had betrayed Elphaba's trust

She had trusted me to stick with her
And not trade friendship for fame
But I had decided to abandon her
So she took all the blame

Then to make things even worse for me
Fiyero left me for her
Now it was I who sadly said
That I'm just not that girl

"But as long as you're mine," I told my love
"There's nothing we can't do."
"No, Glinda," Fiyero told me
"Just like you deserted Elphaba, I'm now deserting you."

So Fiyero, that dimwitted man,
Wouldn't tell me where Elphaba stayed
So the Wizard turned him into a scarecrow
And took away his brain

When the Wicked Witch heard of this,
She blamed it on herself
For although she hadn't meant any harm,
He was a scarecrow because of her spells

From that day on, Elphaba said,
She was wicked through and through
And no good deed would go unpunished
As long as there was something she could do

The march of the witch hunters was unnecessary
For I found Elphie first
And she told me that she was finally giving up
So I should say my parting words

"You have changed me for good, dear Elphaba
And you are my best friend
Then we hugged for one last time
And she went to meet her end

~♥♥♥~

So that's the finale of Elphaba's life
It's not nearly as grand as she
For she was truly unafraid to follow her visions
And defy the pull of gravity

Author notes

I didn't think I could do 'For Good' justice, so I decided to challenge myself and see if I could rewrite the musical AND incorporate all the song titles. Hope you like it!

Holy...wow. Utterly beautiful. You did an amazing job capturing the story. I don't know any better way this could have been done.

    Fantastic!

I have read Wicked and I LOVED this poem. I did sort of wonder about Elphie and Fiyero in the book. I haven't been able to see the play though, so I'm not sure how different it is from the book. This was wonderfully written. :

    WOW!!!

Wow!! That was AMAZING!!!!! You incorportated all the titles into it so well, and ... just wow... lol... There were a few choppy parts with the rythm, but they didn't really effect the poem at all. In fact, it kind of worked with hte poem and Elphie's life, some of it flowing smooth, other times choppy. I liked it a lot. I wouldn't change a thing! great write!
