December.

It was a cold night of December
As shadows lingered through the ember
Beneath the crouching trees of old
Upon that cold night of December
From darkened shadows, oh I remember
The fate of the loving Lenore
The fate of my longing and loving Lenore
-
I sat at my window gazing
Upon the sky, the stars there blazing
Burning stronger, burning brighter
Than I’ve ever seen before
Thus there came to me a memory,
Of the saintly days of yore
Those days of wonder,
When through the glade,
I wandered with my sweet Lenore
Whom the angels high adored
My longing and loving Lenore
-
Within the shadows of my chamber,
I sat and dreamt this bleak December
Dreaming dreams of love and death,
That no man dared to dream before
And thus sitting at my window
I gazed upon the stars alight
Sitting dreaming at my window
In this cold December night
Dreaming dreams of my loving Lenore
Dreams of my longing and loving Lenore
-
The wind had grown beyond my window
Grown beyond the strength of storm
As I behind my window sat
I cursed the snowflakes, which it bore
Upon the pain the kiss of winter
Printed by its icy lips
As the kiss from my loving Lenore
Like the kiss of my longing and loving Lenore
-
Thus I sat there at my window,
Gazing out into the night
The snow fell white upon the meadow
Beneath the stars that shone alight
Alight like the eyes of Lenore
Like the eyes of my longing and loving Lenore
-
The fires burning in the chimney
As embers turned to blazing flames
I wondered if my love would see me
From beyond the shadows veil
I wondered whether she would know me
Ah, the memory of the lost Lenore
The memory of my longing and loving Lenore
-
Outside my window the storm did silence
As did my sorrow within
And as the snow fell silent
I opened my door to the wind
Before me lay a land unknown
Covered in a cloak of white
Starlight glittered in its surface
In the depths of this lonely night
As fair as the skin of my lost Lenore
As the skin of my longing and loving Lenore
-
Shining snow lay at my feet
Glittering like stars alight
Thus surprised I was to see
The trace of feet in front of me
For none had ever walked these plains
Save but her and me
Me, and my longing and loving Lenore
-
Upon this mystery, long I pondered
My soul and heart did gaze in wonder
For I knew that none had walked these plains
Yet I could not help but wonder
And I knew that she would have done the same
Oh, my curious Lenore
My longing and loving Lenore
-
Hidden under curtains white
Deep in dark December night
The trace I followed, through the shades
Through the landscapes winter-maze
Suddenly, before me rose
A shade, which I had somehow known
Her figure shrouded in starlit glow
The shade of my fading Lenore
Yes, t´was the shade of my longing and loving Lenore
-
Long I gazed upon her figure
Veiled in shades of starlit night
Now burning stronger, with renewed vigour
In the cold December night
Standing there in front of me
She gazed at me so tenderly
She seemed to shiver to and fro
As if an unseen wind did blow
Deep within stars shaded glow
Oh, my trembling Lenore
My longing and loving Lenore
-
Her voice, it spoke from the beyond
Telling me of love in death
Of the peace, which she had shunned
As she drew her final breath
How she had wowed to wait for me
And not break up our unity
Ah, my sweet and faithful Lenore
My longing and loving Lenore
-
Yet her words from out of shadows
Filled me with a strange unease
Upon the winter shrouded meadow
Her beauty floating in the breeze
Her, so vague and shadowlike
As a feather caught in windy flight
Floating in the wind this night
My longing and loving Lenore
The ghost of my longing and loving Lenore

-
Gazing into the depths of her eyes
Her dark gaze, strange and seductive
I knew those words to be a cover of lies
Of a soul being wicked, destructive
Soft words floating from the shades of beyond
Spoken of my lonely Lenore
Spoken by my longing and loving Lenore
-
Yet against love reason struggles in vain
And hers was a charade even stronger than death
I knew not her embrace to be that of pain
Yet her kiss proved to be, indeed, that of death
And seducing me still with her eyes dark gaze
She led me into that shadowy maze
Dying with each of my longing sighs
Beneath the stars that shone so bright
Held by my gentle Lenore
In the embrace of my longing and loving Lenore
-
Sudden silence, breathless, waiting
The wind, the breeze to silence fading
Footprints in the shining snow
Have faded in the soil below
This cold world fading before my eyes
As have faded the sound of her sighs
The sighs of my deceitful Lenore
And the sighs of my longing and loving Lenore
-
Upon that night of cold December
None recall and none remember
Her fate of deepest tragedy
Thus her death remain a mystery
Though traces leading to the tomb
Where asleep she dwells in winter’s womb
Thus her words have come to pass
Side by side they dwell at last
Upon the starlit winter-meadow
Within that vault of love and shadow
Upon those endless winter-plains
Where winds are whispering their names
The lover drifting far ashore
At last to dwell where blizzards roar
In the embrace of sweet Lenore
United now forevermore…

Deeply moving poem...haunting and set in the chill of winters embrace. Very nicely written and deeply touching...love beyond the grave, but can she be trusted? Thanks for your entry and best of luck in the contest!

WOW! Shades of Poe I did read. Long and windy in the breeze. But just as good or even better... this one flows upon the wind like a feather caught in a breeze that is chilling a tale of a lover's telling. Very well done. Keep the ink flowing and good luck!

So, was this previously inspired by a contest to mimic Poe? Even the name is the same of the lady in The Raven, apes the flow and some words as well (granted, 'bleak December is prob'ly in several poems').

"How she had wowed to wait for me" - vowed.

    Good luck in the contest.

What a wonderful read you have provided this reader. I notice that Poe had been mentioned I too got that feeling as soon as I started Perhaps that is why I enjoyed it so much. All the very best in the contest

Longing and loving Lenore... I found the repitition added quite and emphasis to this piece! It reminds me of something Poe might have written... I enjoyed the imagery and depth here!
Best wishes to you and thanks for entering!
    Blessings,
