For Gennelle, In Honour of Marriage

Like ours, your married life has many seasons,
not only years, but feasts and famine too;
your loyalty is rare for many reasons,
success is not assured when love is true.
In trial and turmoil often hearts are broken,
and lovers flee to tend their wounds alone;
at times remembering that oaths were spoken
gives will to persevere through caves of stone.
The future is a clouded sky, foreseeing
depends instead on looking to the past;
and those who have united soul and being
will not be parted, loving bonds will last.
True minds in marriage never will admit
impediments - nor wane of love permit.

    Conmgratulations dear friend

    At least someone you have befriended pipped you in this contest.
    Sonnets had the day for Gennelle, didn't they? Your sonnet packed more punch, I felt, but then I was not on the panel.

    Let me not to the marriage of true minds

    admit impediment ... oh, Margaret! Oh, Shakespeare!
    This is a classical sonnet, albeit a variant of the strictness we sometimes impose on the Bard himself; and, he varied his iambs at times. For some reason these wise lines shook me a bit:
    "The future is a clouded sky, foreseeing
    depends instead on looking to the past;".

    Beautiful sonnet, Margaret. Classical. And, very Margaretesque!

    Awesome sonnet!

    Dear Margaret so many truths here. Each season holds its own flavors and temperatures indeed. Something my grandma used to say was... "marriage is the pot which love is boiled in and sampled from. Sometimes in big gulps and at other times just a spoon will do. Being at an even level with our partner lessens the heat and adds the right ingrediants to the sauce."
    It takes all the right ingrediants to meet your soulmate and to endure all that comes along the path.

    I enjoyed this so much especially your ending. Marvelous work my sweet friend
    Best wishes in this contest!

    love and blessings Sandi

    I didn't even know

    She was married. Then again I don't know much about anything. When is your anniversary margaret?

    The future is a clouded sky, foreseeing
    depends instead on looking to the past;,/i>

    I like that, seems right to me.

    Excuse the drab comment, not feeling so hot, I'll live.

      Dear Yem, people tell me things.

      I think the science of prediction is called "Actuary", or something like that. The principle is that the future is a lot like the past, barring dramatic change (we all know how seldom that occurs).

      I hope you are taking good care of yourself.

    Excellent composition!!!

    Very well written. Flow is with deliberate commitment and guided step to a desired end. The point where one takes pause to look where readers' eyes will read. And, with confidence, feels in thoughts of efforts made poetically... When such diligent effort and focus are spun into poetry and such, too, applied to life and marriage... We reap and sow rewards therein.

    It does indeed take two tenacious beings to maintain a relationship. And a forgiveness we all have troubles with in varied degrees.Yet I've always thought,no wish to find that one soul who in a seconds glance knows my intent of purpose and visa versa.I think you two might talk more frequintly than she and I. But I recall her saying to me at one point,he was her soulmate.It's a rare thing to by grand design come across one who knows your patterns and understands motives behind them without being told. Just a simple smile tells you,they know! Words are more or less unnessasary between these sorts. Your piece Margret is an exceptional sonnet.I'm still learning as you well know from my occasional baggering of you in questions pertaining to the form.Simply lovely!~~Suseann

      Dear Suseann, thank you for your thoughtful comment and applause. The sonnet is the perfect length for one medium sized idea.

      There is a special spark between people who are committed to loving one another no matter what. If it was destined, I don't have any evidence for or against. I married my best friend.

    Such wise and loving words of advice for a happy marriage, Margaret. To make it to twenty-five is, in these days, somewhat amazing. It is a remarkable testimonial to the love and respect in her marriage. Hugs, Patricia

      Thanks Patricia!
      Is this advice? Maybe it is! Remembering that I chose marriage with one person over all others gives a structure in which to face the uncertainty of life. What really shakes me is that even this may be undone one day, so I cherish our days together.

    Beautiful

    wonderful lines : "and those who have united soul and being/ will not be parted, loving bonds will last." You have beautifully expressed the purity and sanctity of love that manifests itself wholly in the bond of marraige. Wonderful sonnet. I join you in wishing Gennelle happiness in the years to come...

    Yay! A Sonnet for me!

    Wonderful, wonderful Margaret! It's a real honour to have a sonnet from you.. you know how I love yours I'm not even sure what kind this is though, lol

    Yes, we do have a rare bond and been through a lot of rough times but, thankfully, never with each other..it was always from outside. So we really are like 'comrades in arms', best friends forever

    I love your background too, such a beautiful soft green.

    Thank you dear heart! This means so much to me

    Gennelle

      Just for you

      This is a variant Shakespearean sonnet with "feminine" endings on the odd lines, and a nod to his own Sonnet 116, my favorite, in the couplet.

      Challenges from outside can create challenges within, we must be vigilant as couples and as individuals.

      Posting this I figured out how to get the text colours to "add up". That is some system!
