the perfect autumn leaf
falling softly
onto the forest floor
golden, bright, beautiful
unique
a shade lighter
than its companions
whole and crisp
until careless feet
crush it
grinding it into
the dirty ground
Things get damaged
the monarch butterfly
with its gorgeous orange wings
flitting about
among the flowers
gentle, majestic
providing joy
and harming none
until thoughtless fingers
touch its lovely wings
and the butterfly
can fly no more
Things get damaged
the little child who skips
singing merrily
along the sidewalk
blithely oblivious to its cracks
until the day she falls
breaking open
the smooth, flawless envelope
of her skin
Things get damaged
the crimson rose
in full bloom
an open blossom
at its fullest
admired and appreciated
but left untouched
until the day its petals
are plucked away
by cruel fingers
that leave it bare and naked
Things get damaged
some can be repaired
healed
carefully stitched or reattached
by effort
or by nature
but sometimes
this isn't possible...
and even those repaired
will always show the marks
from where they came apart
Things get damaged
and I
am one of
those things...
Author notes
this is supposed to be symbolic...
leaf= people of free spirits who are crushed by society or specific people, dominated
butterfly- someone damaged by abuse
child hurting knee- someone whose innocence is broken. we are born innocent adn eventually someone ruins its perfect trust
rose- someone who is sexually violated
don't know how clear or how good that was. suggestions?

I don't think the specifics (in your author's notes)of what you want to get across really matters. What matters is the "items" you chose are very fragile, and can be so easily damaged and destroyed, much like the human psyche.
This is what mmakes this such a powerful metaphor, and poem.
Did you condier "tear" rather than "touch" for the butterfly wings?
Congrats on you bronze trophy!

Just when I thought I had my finalist list sorted adn stuff, you had to go and deliver this masterpiece. Sheesh.
Hahaha, awesome right mate, really tops. I love the metaphors you use and explain in your authors notes.
Impressive indeed.
Only disappointment is the last stanza, i feel it could have been done a lot better and given the feeling of a full conclusion. But then again, it left me hanging, and thjats an effective conclusion in itself.
Great write, goodluck in the conest.

I love the symbolic imagery. It doesn't always matter if it shows as it's important to challenge the readers mind to question what you mean by things. Many poets write with metaphor to get their points across. In times when challenging the government poets ued to disguise negative comments about the government in their poetry. Thanks for sharing and good luck.

I love love love the imagery you used here!! And the symbolism was beautiful. Keep up the wonderful work!
As a victim of all of the aforementioned symbols, this poem really meant a lot to me. Thanks for the wonderful write!
