"Agnus Mariae"

Mary had a little Lamb,

She laid Him in the manger;

The Ox and Ass bowed down their heads

To view the little Stranger.

Author notes

I am not sure if this is very first poem I ever wrote - but it is the earliest to which I can give a definite date! It was written in December 1946 - yes, that is what I said, December 1946 - to go on the greetings cards I was making for family and friends. I was 10 years old at the time - and quite atrociously pious!

      Sorry... I do not think I could add to it - this is how it came to me, and I feel any addition made to it now would be extraneous. It was intended for a greetings card... and had better remain as such. I entered it in this competition simply as a literary curiosity, and because I know how disappointing it is to have only a handful of entries... and I had nothing else even remotely suitable for you.

    something like this in our lives. To be
    able to look back and see just how far you
    have come as a writer. Thanks a lot for

    I think you fixed the pious part pretty good! Loved your piece on Hagar. Almmost, but still like Mrs. Potiphar best.

      So glad you liked these pieces... I find religious "feelings" rather difficult to write about - but I find Biblical THEMES a great source of inspiration... I understand that under this new procedure, one is supposed to grade comments and critiques so that the person wgo made them can get points. I am not sure how this works... but I shall try clicking on the stars after your name.. Do let me know if anything happens! As far as I am concerned, this update was a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

    nice job

    This is so cute. Wow! That was a long time ago. I'm trying to get my grandma to join the site, but she says she's too old to write for the public. I'll have to show her your work!

    Oh wow. 59 years ago? Amazing. HOnestly, I think this is one of the best pieces anyone has submitted.
    Keep up the killer work, take care, and keep on writing!
    Good luck in my contest

      Thank you for these kind words... I certainly shall "Keep on Writing" - I have just agreed in principle the contract for a book (some 300 pages of poetry) to be published in 2011....
