A single tree upholds the world,
With all its melody and hum
Cacophonous, tattooed and knurled.
For clarity – hark to a drum!
Author notes
I was asked for a single quatrain for possible inclusion on a restored djembe. The above is what came instantly into my mind. The djembe is now in the New Orleans Museum of Art.

If I were a drum, would you beat me?
And if a chair?
And if only a part, complete me?
But I'm only a typo.
They say if you stare at the drum long enough you will go mad. Well, not they, me.

... so don't stare at it.

Dear Mairi,
Very clever use of the "hum" - they do resonate - lingering in the mind also long after the deepest beat.
Glad to be aware of your current project.
Your barn-pot,
Tangle

MA I hope you show it to him, and I hope he does like it, and understands it too. Thanks for the visit.

How true and fine!
Such a fine idea to meet the challenge of the request! I enjoyed seeing this a reading your quatrain.
It is a noteworthy commentary on the majestic drum!
