Drawing by Renelle Sommerville
When Reni sent me this sketch I just knew I had to write about it. The only question was what to write. I just thank her very sincerely for sharing it with me and allowing me to use it and write about it. A very, very talented young lady!
With December coming, her heart fills with fear
For that is the special time when she will hear
Of Christmas and Santa, and as that time nears,
The little one tries hard to swallow her fears.
She’s often found hiding upstairs ‘neath her bed.
No visions of sugar plums dance in her head.
The talk about presents are words left unsaid,
She hears about sorrow and hunger instead.
Then one day there came a light knock at her door,
And Reni, caught up in her e’er present chores
Of washing the dishes and scrubbing the floors,
Was trapped in a corner and down on all fours.
With horrified look and a whispered, "oh no!"
Poor Reni called out in a voice soft and low.
She wasn’t quite sure she'd been heard, although
She saw someone framed in the doorway's pale glow.
A small girl her own size, perhaps about eight
Had somehow appeared and would alter her fate.
She smiled and she waved and then said, "My name’s Kate.
I certainly hope that I’m not here too late.
I hope you don’t think I am being a pest,
But all of my life I've been loved and been blessed."
Then seeing the bundle clutched tight to her breast,
Our down-trodden Reni waved in her new guest.
She stared at her friend with her eyes open wide,
And then squinting a bit, she tried to decide,
What the bundle was she was trying to hide,
And why she had brought this mys'try inside.
Kate held out her arms, a smile on her face,
The glow of it certainly brightened this place.
Then she held the doll out, the one she called Grace,
And so quickly gave it a final embrace.
"Merry Christmas," she said with the kindest grin.
"I thank you so much for inviting me in."
A soft, teary quiver of Reni’s small chin,
A wonderful friendship that would now begin.
