Prayer to Death

Oh spirit who takes souls away
I tell you, you took the wrong soul today
His body was strong and young
And now his future deeds will be left unsung

Oh spirit who takes life away
You have taken the wrong life today
He was but a mere child
He gave birth to innocence each time he smiled

Spirit who took my son away
Why did you have to take him today?
Old men lie on their death beds
Why couldn’t you have taken one of them instead?

-----------------------------------------------

To whom said the prayer in plea
I had no choice but to take him with me
His will was strong but he was destined to be ill
Would you rather he suffers before growing still?

My choice is made by the innocence of his heart
It is too gentle for disease to rip apart
You will thank me one day
When you realize why I took your boy away

wow...I liked this poem. I got out of it that a dad is speaking to death and wants his boy to live even though he is obviously suffering from some sort of life threatening disease. Although quite dark, it was so sad... would you please read one of my poems and comment? If you like dark poetry, you would probably like my poem, "Elsewhere." Thanks
