a battered couch
weighed down by a heavy quilt

a despairing mother
who cries in guilt

a teddy bear
missing an eye

a little girl
asking why

a dirty carpet
stained with beer

an older brother
with a single tear

an empty bottle
laying on its side

the nuclear family
has gone and died
