Human Behavior

It’s hard to extol the merits of mankind
and to lavish excessive praise is insane;
recognize the gamut of vain emotion
and treatment of our brothers that’s inhumane.

The natural nature of man is hardly good –
Proof is found in our vocabulary;
despite incredible accomplishments of this world,
poor relationships of man to extremes are still carried.

Our literature and news is littered
with ugly views of crime and hate.
For brief review of the damage perpetuated,
let’s take time to reiterate.

There’s slavery, incest, murder, torture,
greed, rape, hatred, genocide, racism,
bigotry, fear, starvation, thievery,
lasciviousness and terrorism.

Uncaring predators have always existed,
unable to overcome the evil within.
Such conditions show our need for a loving God,
to triumph over the presence and affects of sin.

    scary but true

    The other day my eight year old asked me why God allows dreadful things to happen, and i tried to explain to him about free will, his comment wa there are an awful lot of people not making good decisions and h is so right, more and more people seem to have a problem with living basically good christian lives, i dont even mean being in churc and so on, thats each mans choice, but of late the world seems to be flooded with evil, pretty scary stuff really, makes you wonder whats next, this is a very thought provoking piece, actually makes me wonder if ive done enough lately to actively live out my faith, perhaps i should go and eread my bible, thanks i needed this littlefishone

    Very true -- Well written

    I agree with ALL of this fine poem. People are NOT "basically good." At the individual level we are divisive, and at the group level we present a herd mentality! The LOVE OF SELF AND NEIGHBOR, in other words: LOVE really is the answer, but is not allowed to work since it must be practiced universally by everyone. Heaven, by definition, is where it is. There can be nothing less that the practice of perfect love by everyone in a heaven. This will never happen here.

    Hmmmm ...

    interesting range of responses to this, I see. I, myself, tend to disagree as well. Then again, I suspect much of what we feel as human beings comes from our past and the way life has treated us. I don't know enough about your past or the way life has treated you to make any value judgement. I think this is a bit unrealistic, but then I think what Fall.Of.Rome says below is unrealistic too. A quote I remember from a favorite Aunt:

    "There's so much bad in the best of us, and so much good in the worst of us that it little behooves the best of us to talk about the rest of us."

        How pathetic ...

        to come up with something that ignorant and that childish.

          That's not childish; you're fence-sitting, and refusing to make an argument of your own. You're saying, "Well, I don't agree with you, and I don't agree with you, either. Here's someone else's words instead of my own." Explain how that's childish.

    Gandhi would disagree with you. Buddha probably would, too. Oh, and not to mention myself. I believe human beings to be naturally kind and non-violent, rather than this Hobbesian mess you've come up with. It's been the job of religion from the start to convince us that we are these flawed and horrible beings, and I refuse to believe it, and refuse to be silent when I find this site subjected to such crap.

    In this plane many still fight for Love and justice, while an increasing number of souls seem on or past the border of being corrupted. The idea of this entire universe is to corrupt souls, to rip them away from The Light and turn them against it. But we will continue to fight the abuse and corruption, my friend, even if it kills us. Dying will set us free from this plane of horrors, but it is not ours to decide where and when. And before that time we must honor the True Light in all we do, say and think. I believe your poem is an excellent example of this frame of mind and heart that is unremittingly focused on The Light. Thank you for creating and sharing. Take care, and keep fighting.
