I Want What They've Got!

Missing image
oh they know there are ones who snicker
they hear all the jokes
about how old they are and wrinkled
how they should stay off the roads
but they just keep on moving
doing whatever life has for them
each day, a brand new one
they can't wait to get started again
hand in hand they slowly walk
all those way-back-then talks
happy as two lovers can be
as the world carries on their mocks
never been a day separate
for they own each others heart
makes you wonder if the rest
of this world is as smart

I want what they've got!

A lot of "the elderly" have a twinkle in their eye, love in their heart, and a purpose in life that puts the rest of us to shame.

I would like to be this couple someday, too!

I really like this poem, it made me think about how the workd always says things about groups of people and I really like that you took a different look at it and I think that you did a good job with it. Great job on this jpoem and good luck in my contest.

Oh this is beautiful…I do agree with you that aged people “just keep on moving
doing whatever life has for them…” and I think the youth must emulate them for that characteristic…thank you for sharing your poem…

    should be wonder

I really enjoyed this. Good luck in the contest.

The elderly are so full of faith and strength and they cherish each new day that they are blessed with. We should take some advice from them and learn how to really live life to its fullest. Excellent write

This is a gorgeous poem and makes me feel quite emotional, I no longer have any grandparents alive, I only knew one set, but they were just like you mention here, I miss them so much and hope that one day I will be with some as loving till a ripe old age and grandchildren of my own

I have much respect for the elderly and look up to them all the time...thank you for this super write, much appreciated

    Love and smiles

I agree with you...there is nothing like being in the presence of a loving couple who have shared their lives and hearts for 40, 50, or even 60 years...truly an enchanting love to witness...

I have the upmost respect for the elderly just because they have gotten all the way through life alive... I mean, so many people die at a young age, but they managed to stay together, stay in love, and keep on living life. I love my grandparents and only hope that one day I can be like them ( I wrote a poem about it actually). Lovely job and I completely agree with the message. Thanks for sharing

Love this poem - love the idea of love staying till we all hit that ripe old age. That feeling of comfort, of being loved, of needing someone who is always there. this flowed so well, easy to read and understand; sentiments well expressed in these lines.

    Wonderful and Endearing!

....ahhhhh...such was the way of love in past times, moreso than today. what happened to the commitment? it seems like in our fast-food society, relationships are almost as quickly consumed and tossed!

I applaud you on such a well-crafted write, embodying the love we should work to keep alive!

Thankyou for sharing this wonderful piece!

Thank you so much my friend! Yes isn't it very sad that considering our society, we won't see that many elderly couples (who have lasted through the years)as we have in the past.

Aw, this was really sweet. Too true, as well. Is the line- "all that way-back-then talks" maybe supposed to be "talk" instead? Perhaps I read it wrong, though. Just sounded a little awkward. But other than that one tiny thing I really thought this was just superb

Thank you sweetie! well I added the "s" because they have regular talks about way back then. But I may changed that to make it sound better. GBY

We always want what the other person has. In this case, I am inclined to agree with you. I rather be loved and grow old with the one I love.
