It Was Always Him

I was his damsel in distress.

He was my shield; he was

my armor.  He was

my sworn protector.  Ever in need

of a savior, it was he

who brought me safely home...

carried me from the flames

that would have consumed me.

When faced with the loneliness

of a loveless existence,

it was he who brought me solace.

The memory of his embrace

can warm me still.  Everything I needed

was in his arms.  I found my release

in him, and loved without abandon.

He was my blessing and my curse--

my virtuous traitor.

I sacrificed so much for him--for his caress,

for his soft kiss.  My marriage,

my crown, my honor--gave myself

to him completely.  I sacrificed

a kingdom for salvation,

but I regret nothing.

Author notes

I chose options 13 and 19 and combined them into one poem. The topics that were given to me were: Camelot, knight in shining armor, and the quote "It is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all."

It is, of course a poem about Guinevere and her love for Lancelot.

This is a write I like for this contest, though told in a hazy first person narritive, it is more like the essence of the scene alluded to, for the imagery is nice, to me the drama of this, could be heightened.

This is the second entry I have read focusing on the couple Guinevere and Lancelot and I love it! I have to say the colors in the background and font and the picture really added to this. You did a lovely job bringing this piece to life with excellent imagery and romantic word choice. Well done. Thank you for entering and good luck.

I cannot resist a lancelot Guievere posting it was all so romantic and you have captured the essence of their romance, and the consequences of it, especially the last stanza,
