City of the Clouds

Three hundred and seventy-nine years alone,
Until the late Hiram Bingham made it known,
In the land of the ancients in old Peru,
Sits the wondrous city of Machu Picchu.
High in the Andes amongst the low-lain clouds,
Away from the rest of the world, far from crowds.
Stones cut with near-perfect ashlar precision,
Masonry without mortar, keen recision.
A city on the hill, cut into the peak.
Tranquil beauty which thousands journey to seek.
Enter the New 7 Wonders Foundation,
They seek to give it a new connotation.
It could be one of the seven wonders soon.
Kindly vote today, and join the platoon.
Machu Picchu is Peru's archaic gem.
So go to the website, give a judgment in rem.

Author notes

I'm not 100% sure about this poem, but I loved the contest idea and had to put something in, so this will do for now.

I love Machu Picchu, it truly is a marvel of ancient engineering. In my mind it really deserves an elevated status as a wonder of the world.

I used some odd words in there, for comprehension I've added the following definitions:

The phrase 'judgment in rem' is a legal term referring to a "judgment pronounced on the status of some particular subject or property or thing"

Ashlar is a type of masonry in which blocks of stone are cut to fit together tightly without mortar.

    A Great Honor

Hidden for eons in mystic cloud cover
the heights that she scales are unlike any other.
Follow the lead, climb the path ever higher
To a place that the locals describe with desire.

Aided, abetted, academics don't sweat it.
What's theirs for the taking, few live to regret it
for what would the world know of Machu Picchu
if not for a leading U.S. college crew?

Asleep like the Beauty ensconsed in the briars
    Peruvian mountaintop -- emerald byre.
Returning her history that we did uncover
seems only right now, it was ours to discover.

I originally had something about "The Heights of Machu Picchu" in the poem, but I just couldn't nail the syllable count with the rhyme structure. Thanks for the comment!

A great entry for my personal favorite. You prompted me to look into it more and I found out that Yale is in a battle with Peru who want the artifacts he took with him to be returned now so your notes about judgement in REM are a propos. Did you know that Pablo Neruda wrote an epic poem called "The Heights of Machu Picchu"? I hope you'll leave this in the contest so we can all check back next summer 7/7/07 when the vote comes in and see how our choices held up. Thanks, SPAMkid and all the best, ea

I agree about Machu Pichu, it should have been included on the list. The wonder of it, and the Incan civilization are a marvel.
