A Poem for James Evan Adams
I wake up every morning, knowing you are gone.
I am reminded of that when I hear that same sad song.
Tears of sorrow were shed that sad, sorry day.
We stood at the grave where you now lay.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
That's what I say, if I must.
"I want no condolences because I feel no pain."
If I told you that it would be a lie because it will never be the same.
You weren't much of a father; that is true.
But that doesn't mean I wont miss you.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Thats what I say, if I must.
Your mother and sister cried that day.
"I miss you, Jim" is all they would say.
You left so long ago.
Leaving me and Mom all alone.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
That's what I say, if I must.
I remember growing up without you.
I remember growing up knowing nothing about you.
And yet at the funeral tears came.
I wished it could be the same.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
That's what I say, if I must.
What can I say about the man whom I never knew?
Can I honestly say that I'll miss you?
I may have grown up not knowing you.
But I can still say that I love you.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
That's what I say, if I must.
I place this rose on your coffin.
Hoping, somehow, you are watching.
I bid my farewells, I bid my adieus.
Goodbye Dad, I'll miss you.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
That's what I say, if I must.
