conditioning elephants

when elephants are babies
well, maybe not that young
when elephants are toddlers
and little kid elephants
they have to be taught
taught things that will serve them well
in their adult elephant lives
oh, but not elephant things
matriarchs know what they are doing
and they do it right
toddler elephants
and little kid elephants
must learn other very important things
very important human things
the scrawny bipeds
are in control
complete control
and 'best not forget it'
so little Elijah
and little Eva
and little Ethan
and little Emma
are chained with heavy steel
a bracelet 'round the ankle
welded to a spike driven into the ground
deep into the ground
so they may pull
and pull
but their mom Eileen knows
'ain't no getting away
with that big thick chain
dragging along behind ya'
and poor Eileen
with her stylish bracelet as well
made of rope
clothesline and easily breakable
if you're an elephant
but she was chained and always with steel
so never knew
that she's been free for years now
so couldn't tell her little one
the truth
and 'ain't it vicious...'
'what they do to us'?

Author notes

Something I learned a long time ago that still makes me sad.  I hadn't thought about it in forever; gee, thanks!

It's about guidelines masquerading as rules masquerading as laws. It's about people's general inability to see beyond their own expectations and perception of reality. It's about the continuing legacy of ignorance. It's about elephants.

I'm not sure what, if anything, this has to do with frozen meatloaf, unless you're suggesting that the elephants end up on a stick?
