The Gift of a Rose

The fragrance ever lingers on the hand
of him who gives the beauty of a rose,
who lifts his hands to God then blesses man
so that his gift may prosper where he goes.

Before he gives his gift he prunes it well
to offer it without ill will or thorn.
For even in his garden's drabbest spell
he gives his best, not something bruised or torn.

In blessings from the heart that love bestows
God's gifts are as the sweetness of a kiss,
as fragrant as the petals of a rose
when offered in the servitude of bliss.

To give possessions is not Heaven's call;
the man who gives himself hath given all!

Beautiful thoughts and words, Belle! I like the couplet the most - a material gift cannot compare to oneself. Congratulations for a lovely sonnet and your silver prize.

    A rose's spell

Lyrical little prayer, the one we forget, that of a rose we seek, the thought sometimes fades into mondaine,; here your sonnet sings of faith and love and of sacrifice .

of a rose and of self

I came upon this poem, of a rose, and found it unique, almost had a scent of the rose imbued; a gift of a rose and a gift of oneself, ..so well said as a gifted poet you are as this sonnet
filled with beauty.I especially liked your turn of phrase on the ninth line then the final couplet ...I wish I were so adept.

I almost chuckled when I saw the words "Shakespearean sonnet", because that was obvious from the word go. I think this is an excellent example. I spot something like this and wonder why I think I am any good at the form. I notice you have attracted my old friend Michael (Eusebius) - he knows a good sonnet when he sees it!

    dearest annabelle,
your poem is a true blessing.
not only do I love your sonnets, but this time, I appreciated the use of simple words for revealing your message. the perfume of innocence has spread through your words, and isn't it exactly this innocence that we all have to rediscover within our hearts ? your poetic way of speaking about selfless service has really resonated with truth, and the closing lines say it all, when they teach us that the only true offering is the offering of ourselves ...
thank you so much for such a touching message.
    much love,

    maa
