On the beach
The memories of youth come back to me;
I marvel at the girl who's standing there.
Was that me there, this young girl that I see
so poised, the sea-wind blowing through her hair?
Eyes dreamy as she wonders what’s ahead
for her. Will life be good and treat her well
as, down its pathway, future steps will lead
to seek a fortune only time will tell?
Perhaps, before her eyes, she sees appear
the man to whom, with love his children born,
the hopes and dreams of future life she'll share
with tears or laughter at each new day's dawn.
I wonder if that girl, still dreaming some,
can see, with pride, the woman I've become.

I look at old photos
with a mixture of sadness and disbelief. Where did all the years go?
when did I turn into my mother?
I also look at my daughters now in their forties and wonder how they will look when my age.
Of course I'll never know unless I make extreme old bones, heaven forbid.
Hope the woman you became fulfilled her dreams -
-
Dear Patti, my Daughters are also in their forties, neither of them look like me, they're more like their Fathers side. I too wonder how they'll look if they reach my age. I found the Husband I loved, had four beautiful children, Grandchildren and two great Grandsons, so I guess I fulfilled my dreams.
Thank you for the lovely comment sweetheart.

I can't believe I was that skinny Gypsy, but looking at old photo's I was. And it's so true Gypsy we never lose who we are and try to keep the spirit of that young girl alive, let the inner child come out again. Thank you my sweet for your lovely comments.

I believe she can see Joan. She's always a part of you. I don't believe we leave the person we 'were' behind entirely. We just store them away in a little cabinest of our mind to make who we are today
This is an exceptionally done piece! As powerful as it is beautiful. I adore this! Blessings

Dear Renee,
Thank you for your sweet comment, how our bodies change over the years, but our spirit goes on no matter what knocks in life we experience.♥

Look at my gorgeous angel. Just as beautiful then as you are now. These words compliment the beauty you have that shines from the inside out.
You are really getting very good at these Sonnets dear one. Memories are such a delight. Especially when we have so much to look back on that was just as it should have been. I love the third stanza. This is simply beautiful Joan.
God Bless You and Yours
Always your Sister/Friend ♥

Thanks Bill, yeah I was a lot younger then, but I wouldn't change a thing about my life because my dreams did come true.

A lovely write and presentation. Beautiful imagery, flow, rhyme and tone. You articulate your memories so tenderly in this sonnet, melding the hopes and dreams of the past to that of the present. I love your ending couplet. It sums up your sonnet beautifully. Lovely expression of emotion. Nice alliteration. Well crafted and a much enjoyed read. Shelley

Thank you Dee for your lovely comment. How we change when we look back, but our spirit never does, no matter what happens we carry on. I was only in my teens in that picture.

Oh Wow 'Angelica' what a beautiful word image you paint here, a script for hope and joy with a hint of the twists and turns that drive us through our days. There is a stunningness about your poetry, an image that is quite captivation. ---- Thank you
-
Dear Bea,
WOW!! D.P.R. once told me that Aussie sheilas were the tops and it's quite evident that you were a stunner!!
In your maturity your outer beauty is complemented by an inner beauty, much of which has developed from the fulfilment of those early dreams and hopes, i.e. your marriage to Bob, the building of your home together, the bearing and raising of your children and the spiritual strength which has borne you through times of serious ill-health and, recently, the sudden loss of your youngest child. That this inner beauty is apparent in your ouward looks is inevitable.
You are fittingly named "Angelica" and the expressive nature of your poetry is illustrative of the goodness which wells up from your heart and soul.
I applaud and am bookmarking this beautiful sonnet which I invite you to add to the Wyleian collection as number CLXIX.
Love and hugs as always, XXX Hugh.

First of all, Joan, I love the picture. You're every bit as lovely now as you were then, perhaps even more so now with the beauty of life making its contributions. It's fun looking back at old photographs and reminiscing of the moment it was taken. I think this young girl lives on in you, her hopes and dreams, some alive, some dropped along the way as new ones came along.
Your poem is nicely reflective of those youthful dreams, those unknowing thoughts of the future. A wonderful poem, my friend, beautifully expressed.
Love and
Dee
