GONE
He was the boy every mother protected their daughter from. Handsome, rugged and strong he looked like he had walked out of a modeling shoot with his long black hair and Italian good-looks. He had tattoos hidden in places only his ex-girlfriends knew about and every week he was seen with a different girl all pretty and beautiful, clinging to him behind him on his Harley-Davidson looking smug as he had chosen her for that week. But he never cared about them nor did he want them there but like the Nazis women were an object so were they for him. He seemed aloof from all of them and was usually unaware of the people and things around him. In school he rarely cared about what was being taught and was the one who got the lowest grade. He sometimes came to school with a black eye or a cut lip to which rumors spread that he had fought with the boys from the nearby town but he never cared. He was a boy who did not have friends or a steady job and changed jobs like he changed girlfriends but in the end of the day he was as lonely as ever. Growing up in the rowdiest part of the Bronx he had learnt that no one was his friend and no one would help him when he needed it. He had learnt that the hard way when he spent two weeks in prison for something he did not do.
The baby bird in the nest was opening its wings and was being taught how to fly when suddenly a huge shadow blocked his view. There stood Mr. Lionel, the Math’s teacher. He had a piece of paper which had a big F circled in red. The paper came whizzing past one persons head and landed on Robin’s table. Yet again he had managed to get an F in Math. What bothered Mr. Lionel was not the fact that he had got an F, heck most of the kids in class had got an F but what bothered him was that Robin did not care about anything happening around him. He did not wonder as to why he had got an F nor did he ask any question. He just sat in his chair and went on staring out of the window. Getting frustrated Mr. Lionel decided to do something he had never done before. “Well you may be happy with your grade but I am not. Therefore I am going to divide the class into groups of two and the partners will help each other out to study.” He had already thought of the person he was going to partner up with Robin. Though he regretted it he knew it had to be done, as he would be putting his best student’s career on the line. He took one deep breath and looked at Robin. “Mr. Page”. All the girls suddenly sat up straight as if wanting to touch the ceiling but only one remained crouched down looking into her test result wondering why she had got an A- and not an A+. He continued. “Since you were the one who scored the lowest in the test you will be paired with the one who got the highest in this test. Miss. May?” Everyone turned to look at him first and then to her. She was just as shocked as any of them were. She had never expected to talk to him let alone tutor him but now she had to. Mr. Lionel continued to pair the class into groups but no one was that interested in what he was saying. Everyone still looked at her shocked expression and his no reaction attitude. He seemed like he had not heard what had been told to him.
Miss. May or Alice or better known in school as the “doggie girl” was nothing like the girls he had dated. She was to plain and simple. All the time she had her nose in a book and had high goals which no other girl would have thought of. She had wanted to become a Lawyer and was studying as much as she could to fulfill her dreams. When other girls of her age went out for movies with their boyfriends or went for manicures and pedicures with their girlfriends she stayed at home and studied. Even when they had their Spring- Dance she had shown up in a pair of baggy dungarees and while everyone danced the night away she read a book on the Laws made by the US government. Never had she thought that she would be tutoring Robin, the heart-throb of her class, the boy who every girl wanted to date and wanted to make him theirs. She thought that it would be a waste of time but in her heart she knew she wanted to spend time with him even if it was to teach him the basic formula of algebra. So when the bell rang she looked forward to seeing him in the library in 10 minutes but before going there she had to make a quick stop to the bathroom. Just as she came out of the cubicle a girl caught her jacket and pushed her into the wall. Looking up she saw Brianna. Behind her stood her two friends or ‘tails’ as Alice liked to call them. “So little Miss. Doggie girl wants to help my guy in his studies does she? Well she can just keep her paws of him”. Saying this she pushed Alice more into the wall. But Alice was not one to keep quiet. She retorted back, “Well he’s not your man anymore. He broke off with you a week ago.” Alice knew she should not have done that but she could not resist. Brianna became red with anger and slapped her hard in the face. Alice tasted blood in her mouth but she did not cry out. Brianna told her once more to stay away from him and threw her down on the floor. Alice stayed down until she had left and picking up her backpack ran out of the school.
