~~Copper Pennies~~

Missing image
Once a penny could buy
A sucker, or jelly beans
Oh how a child's eye would shine
If on a street
A penny they would find
Pente ante a card game they would play
Laughing and talking
An entertaing way
Now in two thousand three
If a penny is found
It's more likely
To stay on the ground
Walked on, trampled into the earth
No use for a penny
A coin without worth~

I too remember one could buy two bubble gums with a penny and the little jolly rancher was a penny. It sad to see the pennies on the road. I tell my friends they are angel kiss and save them in a jar with my pennies then I give it to a charity in need. I try to do this once a jar it my gift to baby Jesus. I love it from top to bottom. I want to thank you for your comments they mean so very much to me. I love you work it simplely beautiful. I am going to be smiling all day. Love B

    Hi Susan
How well I can relate to this write As a child I used pennies quite a bit! We used to return pop bottles for the 2 pennies they were worth. Oh the fond memories! You made me smile! The penny candies of my youth will ALWAYS be remembered Thank you for sharing this wonderful memory with me

Sad but true. I remember when a penny could buy a lot. As a child in the late 50s and early 60s it got 2 bubble gums amongst other things. Today it's sad to say that a penny buys nothing. Too often I see pennies discarded in the street. Very nicely done. - SG

Well I had to see this one, caught my curiosity, being that my name is Penny LOL..they weren't worth much 40 yrs ago and are worth even less now LOL..I think they were thinking at one time to eliminate them...tho what would one do when an item came to $1.04 with tax ??? LOL..a cute and enjoyable read Susan!!

    good write: good read

Your poem takes me back a few years to the time when you could hold a jawbreaker in your mouth all day for a penny. I love the old memories, your poem was lovely, I've got a jug of pennies on my dresser even now. If you want to read of times past visit my page and browse.

one can cents that you miss the good ol' days of bubblegum machines that sppewed out giant colored treats for a lincoln slug.....penny candy counters endless lidded jars that held sugary delights both chewy and crunchy if you had a copper disc or two...Artis

So true...very sad. But the last line is wrong...as I have recently said, a penny has one use. It can be your friend forever. I liked it though, it's cute, funny and sad all in one. I love it.

There used to be a penny postcard (before my time, of course) LOL One day I was on my lunch break walking with some friends to a restaurant. I saw three pennies on the ground and decided to pick them up. When I finished eating, I found out that I would have been three pennies shy if I wouldn't have picked them up. LOL I always pick up money when I see it...waste not, want not! Loved your poem, Sis! Times have certainly changed! Nice look back at simpler (and cheaper) times!

    Love Ya!

Susan, this is really sad I don't agree 100% though, I know that I pick up a penny any time I see one, but I guess there are people who don't as they grow up, and that's sad, because, as you said, a child would be so happy to find a penny on the ground, and it could always go so far for a little boy or girl...

Very nice poem, the message was very clear, and I liked it

A sweet write of how things was and aren't now and so true to the changes today a penny isn't worth much. You ended this sadly but Im glad a penny dont have feelings. If that been a person or a animal I would have more compassion. Still I guess things just arent what they was...... But true all things shouldnt be taken for granted because true several of them would have worth in saving children in countries without food. Sherry
