To Soar With Eagles...

White capped mountains rising
Brushed with glistening snow
Translucent strings, on eagle wings
Vibrate rhythms from long ago

The pristine pine on meadows edge
Capture voices - stories told
Still at rest, an eagle’s nest
Fossilized, two centuries old

The eagle had a fearless flight
His spirit filled with pride
A maiden fair, with ebon hair
The eagle now her guide

A frame so small, yet in her chest
Beats a drum of giant size
A crystal vase, no wasted space
Shining turquoise from her eyes

The medicine that she mixes
The mantra that she sings
Help her kin, with reddish skin
To see another spring

A spiritual healer weaving
She knows where she belongs
With spirit guide, right by her side
She sings her sacred songs

And as she dances round the fire
In tune with natures vibe
Her eagle soars, to future shores
Carrying prayers for the tribe

Winds of change has brought about
Hushed language to her ears
Indian queen, in fields of green
Finally living without fears

Author notes

I chose option #1 something beautiful

This poem is dedicated to my Shawnee Great Grandmother. She was the medicine woman and spiritual healer in her tribe. She was bought from the U.S. Government for 5 horses and 500 dollars in cash in the mid to late 1800s by my Great Grandfather. We still have her “Bill of Sale”

Atty Weaver was her name. May she always soar with Eagles

Dove,
Proud Shawnee

hehehe, I have been on this page already ... and this contest reminds me something ...
I still remember my shock about having read that your great-grandmother had been "bought" from the us-government ...
I hardly have any words for this ...
but I can say that your poem is just breathtaking ...

Wow, this poem speaks to me in a special way for two reasons. My wife and I just got back from Alaska, and there we saw eagles every day - really the first we'd seen any. Just magestic and beautiful birds - just amazing. The second thing is that I'm from Ohio and the Shawnee's were the main tribe that inhabited Ohio in the 17 and 1800's. I love the form of your poem too, just so very well done. It just put me back in time and out away from civilization. Excellent job! Congratulations on the bronze here.

I am so happy and feel so honored that you and I have both been awarded trophies in the same contest. I congratulate you from my heart, my sister in spirit, and am sure that your great-grandmother is now very, very proud of you and very honored and happy that you have shared with us her story and the wisdom she has transmitted to her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter ...
may her flame always shine and her star always twinkle joyfully in the sky.
    many blessings,

    maa

No it is not a typo, it is ebon hair, (adjective: very dark black) it is a word. I thank you very much for the comment on my poem

In the third stanza I think there is a typo. I'm pretty sure you meant ebony hair but typed ebon hair. Other than that I really like this. Your imagery is great and I love your language. Good luck in the contest! Blessed Be, ~Lilly~

The praise being heaped on this poem is well worthy of being done so.It is an excellent piece and was a pleasure to read. One of those ones that the reader wants to go on and on. But then i guess it would become a book and not a poem Beautiful Good luck in the contest

    dearest cindy,
once again, you have enchanted this little one here with the magic of your words. interwaved wisdom and beauty, sown together with the string of grace, make up the sacred gown which has been transmitted from great-grandmother to grandmother, from grandmother to mother and finally from mother to daughter. the power of your heritage has not been lost, and you are indeed a faithful keeper of this ancient wisdom.
revealing it to those who are now ready to open their eyes, ears and hearts after all those centuries of darkness, will give life again to these sacred ways and make them shine again in the holy flame of truth.
