Pray

She’s a lost little girl who’s simply terrified,
there’s so much hatred and fear she keeps locked inside.
At just twelve, she has learnt not to do a thing wrong,
or else Daddy will lock her up all the day long.

Lost little girl, God’s watching you, so dry your tears,
you’ll be protected through the darkest of nightmares.

Pray for the innocents forever shut away,
pray for the babes who never see the light of day.
Pray for the children who will always feel alone,
pray for the young victims of an unloving home.

He’s a lost little boy who’s wise beyond his years,
he’s seen things most never see, save in their nightmares.
This lost little boy had only just turned seven
when his Mum shot his Dad and sent him to Heaven.

Lost little boy, I’m sorry you witnessed it all,
but your Dad’s with God now, so let no more tears fall.

Pray for the innocents forever shut away,
pray for the babes who never see the light of day.
Pray for the children who will always feel alone,
pray for the young victims of an unloving home.

They can’t always honour their Mummy and Daddy
when their parents convince them they weren’t meant to be.
Their self-worth is destroyed by angry words spoken,
nothing’s worse than a child whose spirit’s broken…

Lost little children, you will never be alone –
one day you’ll join God; then you’ll find a loving home.

Pray for the innocents forever shut away,
pray for the babes who never see the light of day.
Pray for the children who will always feel alone,
pray for the young victims of an unloving home.

Pray…

Author notes

This was inspired by two songs: Martina McBride's "Concrete Angels", and Collin Raye's "The Eleventh Commandment". Both heartbreaking; I suggest you find them.

  • I absolutely love this poem. I have a soft spot for abuse poems and children in any case. thats why Martina McBrides song really touches me in the same way this poem does. There are very simple words used and that just adds to the over all affect. I love the way the words are rhymed. Thank you for entering and good luck.

the most relatable part for me. because that is the age at which my abuse started.

    Profound and touching

This was a very moving poem and done from such a personal angle. It was like you had lived it and now your heart is driven by compassion for the child. It's so hard to imagine that there are children out there going through such pain and agony. I think you have painted such a vivid picture and created such an emotional tone in your poetry. I would'nt change a thing. Loves..........Annette

This is well written, you weave emotion and imagery together and portray it so that the reader is misty eyed before the end,I hope and pray that all abused children feel worthy and complete before they meet God.Perhaps you could add a link in the author box to a helpline site for children so that if any child reads this they are moved by your understanding within your lyrics and moved to contact someone for help.I hope you won't mind my suggestion.A standing ovation from across the pond, love and light,Yvette

I love this, so too often the children are the ones who are forgotten in these sad abusive situations. As adults we have a responsiblity to look out for them and to protect them. My Prayer is that God will help me to recognise those children and will give me the courage to do something about it.

Thank you for bringing the plight of children once again to our notice.

I look forward to hearing this as a song
