Old Grandfather Time
Nobody now knows
Grandmother Hubbard
‘Cept Grandfather Time –
Who was locked in her cupboard.
No one now hears
Their grandchildren’s rhyme
Simply because...
They haven’t the time.
But old Mother Hubbard -
A daughter of theirs,
Lived for a while
Without hardly a care.
But when she grew old
She lived in a shoe
And had so many children
She didn’t know what to do…
For Grandfather Time –
Left too long in that cupboard,
Had eaten all up
What was left by Miss Hubbard.
So the youngsters went hungry –
The cupboard being bare,
And their mother (Miss Hubbard)
Fell into the depths of despair.
……………………………………………
Now you may of course wonder
As often some do
Why the hell this odd ditty
Is addressed to you.
Bad as it is –
In rhyme and in verse,
Its message I send
To prevent Old Hubbard’s curse
If you want the acquaintance
Of Grandfather Time
Follow these instructions
Before you get to your prime.
Don’t follow the Rabbit
Or live in a shoe
Don’t have so many ambitions
You don’t know what to do.
Find an old cupboard –
A wardrobe is fine,
Climb into its depths,
Pull the door close behind…
And breath in the essence
Of all that is true;
Time is your ‘Self’
When it discovers your ‘You’.
………………………………………………
Should you still be wondering
What happened to Hubbard
I’ll tell you quite plain –
She crept into that cupboard
Curling up tightly
And now huddled in there
She noticed the rabbit
vanished into thin air!
Author notes
This was written in reply to a letter lammenting the fact that life has become very much like the pursuite of a particular white rabbit

Seems like hubbard forgot that the chase was the whole point
This is a wonderful message ... crawl in the cupboard to find self and you eat up time ... chase the rabbit and you waste time in pursuit of the elusive ... interesting quandry
