I remember going to the shoe store with my Grandfather,
He bought me the shiny black ones with the strap.
Oh how they shined and I loved to show them off.
I remember feeding the pigs and gathering the eggs together,
I think I had as much fun with him as he had with me.
I remember the card game they brought back from Canada,
And how everyone said he cheated because he always won.
The time we spent in the cellar working on wood projects,
And the rocking cradle we made for my sister’s first child.
I remember the man who wanted to marry me ask him for my hand,
And how proud I was to hold his arm as I walked down the isle.
I remember my Grandmother even more than I thought I would,
Sunday morning dressed in our best for church,
Rushing home afterward for the beans baked all night in the oven.
It was a tradition she said to bake them and so I passed it on,
Her Great Grandson has learned the recipe she gave to me.
I remember how we had a 50th wedding anniversary party for them,
And how my Grandfather always called her his girlfriend.
I remember how my Grandmother sat with my sons for hours,
Reminiscing about life for her as a child so they could earn their badges.
I remember taking her to see ET and how she loved it.
I remember my Grandfather in his white v-neck t-shirt,
And my grandmother always in her apron.
But what I remember most about them both was their love for each other,
And their love for all of us.
I LOVE YOU Mémeré and Péperé
And miss you both
Author notes
