You Knew...didn't you?

You went to fight involuntary
No objection could be said
Three months later
I received a message…saying
Sorry mam your husband is dead

Now I see young men saying goodbye
To all their families and friends
Not knowing why or what is happening
When all this ignorance will end

Will they come home
Wearing a medal on their chest
With a blank smile on their face
Or in a box to be put to rest
A tragedy for the human race

I think of that day
You went away
Leaving a photo on my pillow
And a note telling me to be safe
Wrapped around a rose with petals of yellow

Giving you my last goodbye kiss
I whispered the same words to you
Don’t leave me in this abyss
But didn’t you hear
Was it that unclear?

I received the present
That you sent to me
A medal and daily visits
To the cemetery
Do you like these flowers that I leave for you?
Soaked in tears for the unnecessary
But you knew.. you knew.. you knew.

    Wonderful emotional poem

So so sad. What can you say about a poem like this. It is heartbreaking. Magnificent sentiments in this. I had to stop half-way through reading this, before I could continue on. Very emotional piece of writing.

I could talk all day about the rights and wrongs ( mainly wrongs ) of this horrible war. But, suffice to say, that you have written a wonderful piece of work from the heart. God bless you.

    hello nanna barbara,
I found you through ellie little-hug, my most cherished jewel here on ap. I understand now her love for you, when reading this poem of yours. you have the same compassionate and caring heart as ellie ... I can tell from your words.
this message you offered us here is of great sadness and yes, you are right, it could happen to anyone of us. recently, a very dear friend of my family, a young man of 22, was called to fight in the israel-lebanon-conflict. when he left his mother, not knowing if he would come back, I couldn't stop crying and crying, as if he would have been my own son. does it make a difference : "hers" or "mine" ? all young men are somebody's son, sons of mothers whose heart breaks into pieces when they see their young ones leave for war ... husbands sometimes to wives, fathers sometimes to children, both desperate and fearful about seeing their loved one again one day.
thank you, dear nanna barbara, for inviting us to collectively embrace "our sons" in our thoughts and in our heart, sending them our love and good wishes, and praying for their safe return ...

Barb, this makes my heart ache. The words are so true. Some of us are left with men who survived but the war broke their spirit . This too is most tragic result of war. Thx for sharing.

This is heart-breakingly sad because not only could it be so many people, but it is true for many people... I was crying at the end of this Nanna Barbara. I don't know if you watch Eastenders but I do with my mummy and sister. When Nana Moon died in it after going to see her husbands grave in Germany I couldn't stop crying. It was so sad. They had only been married a few months when he died but she loved him all her life. Oh I know its silly because Eastenders is only a TV program but it made me think about all the people who really did lose husbands, father, brothers in the war. And people are still at war now. It's just not fair. But life is never fair, is it ? We all know that This is painfully beautiful ♥ You wrote it so well. I know it will touch many hearts and make a lot of people stop and think. It certainly made me stop and think... love ellie x

Wonderfully penned, inspiring piece of Litera

Wow! What a so magnificently written poem that we all can relate to -- especially today dear Barb. I really understand what you have said here. This is a very heart penned poem of unusal sentiment that tells a tragic story of all wars. I have seen many a soldiers grave just laying lonely in a field. Only God and Nature for company. Not even a flower, only a memory of some young love keeps the soldier alive in spirit. This is the way of all wars most never remember the young who never grow old. Delightful tribute to the real hero's. The one's that no one knows. God Bless--

My god libra firstly thank you for you comments you my friend are a very talented writer this poem gave me goose bumps all over, such a sad write and so true, I don't understand all these terrible wars. So unnessesary I think all for what, why dont the instigators get there and fight there own battles instead of sending out the innocent hard working poeple who keep this world going.

    So true Libra...
It could just as easily be any of us...
When will the ignorance end? When will the suffering end?
And to what avail? Thanks for sharing...
