I have deafness,
How it feels?
It feels frustrating
when you can't hear and understand
what people are saying.
It makes life challenging for you.
You have a hearing aid but it
doesn't do much difference.
You keep complaining how it is so hard
to hear. People get mad
when you misunderstand them.
But you try to explain to them.
But does no good.
You struggle in life.
It makes life different for
you because of your deafness.
You don't know how others hear
but it doesn't matter because you were born with
your deafness. You talk loud and you get told to lower
your voice and you tell them
I can't help it. I don't know how loud i am talking.
You wish others would understand that you don't try to talk loud.
But it makes no difference.
But you have something special
that others don't have and that is your deafness.
You see the world different than others.
But you are happy the way you are.

Thank you so much for writing this. I have an aunt who has been deaf since birth, and while I do know the alphabet in sign language, I can't really communicate with her or know how she feels. Really, thank you for this poem. It's brave and from the heart... please keep writing!

Dear Deafkid
You are very courageous to say exactly how you feel. Many famous people have disabilities, and because of their disability, they see and discover things that other's don't. Albert Einstein is an example. Beethoven composed his Ninth Symphony after he became deaf. I know that no two people are the same, and that is what makes you unique.
You go for it girl!!
Be the great poet that you are meant to be. Be the spokesperson for other's like you. Maybe you will grow up to be an advocate for people with disabilities.
I admire your strength and determination.
