A perfect square, a blazing summer’s day
Such as my captured mind will not forget:
The riverboats and carriages made way,
A Cajun sang “Allons a Lafayette”.
And some way off, with dignified pizzazz,
A funeral with full-blown second line
Bespiced the August air with piquant jazz;
And you – you smiled and linked your arm with mine!
How merry Andrew Jackson seemed to prance,
As though for circus crowds and not for war.
Our loving, silent progress was a dance,
A pavane for two princesses of yore.
Our parasols put down, we stopped to kiss –
The whole of New Orleans took naught amiss!

What a beautiful style this sonnet possesses, and was very well-crafted indeed. Best of luck in my contest, and thanks for entering this wonderful poem.

Lovely, happy Melodies! Thank you.
My latest poem also celebrates New Orleans, but in a much more sombre way.
