Father, I shall miss you bad
With memories of the times we had
For the wisdom you instilled in me
The strength you showed to just let me be
I may have been a hard son to raise
But, the efforts you made are worthy of praise
Many times in my life I did not seem to care
With the style I chose or the length of my hair
Yet, I always wished to feel your pride
I cherished the moments I spent by your side
The advice that you gave, the lessons you taught
From the times that we laughed, to the times that we fought
Surely, there are things I regret from the past
Like I wanted too much and grew up too fast
And you always said I had potential indeed
But, without perseverance I would never succeed
So you took me to work and showed me a trade
I learned to be proud of the things that I made
Though I haven't learned all the things that you've known
There are so many things I must learn on my own
The essence of you will surely live on
Carried by me even after you're gone
This gift I was given, I carry inside
With dignity, honor, courage and pride
I hope you will watch over my destiny's road
To help in danger and lighten my load
It would please me to know you'll be smiling down
Even though that I know you're no longer around
The love that we had may have been hard to show
Harder to measure, even harder to know
It may not have been spoken or made very clear
So allow me to tell you right now and right here
Father, I love you and I thank what you've done
I will always be proud that I am your son
Through my life, may your life be given new lease
May your memory live on and may you rest in peace
In memory of John R. Williams

"Like I wanted too much and grew up to fast" TOO
"With honor, courage, dignity and pride" This didn't flow right. Try - With dignity, honor, courage and pride.
"So allow to tell you right now and right here" Allow ME to tell you?
All in all, I feel like this is a really amazing piece.
If I could only find three things to criticize, you know you're doing good.
Thanks so much for entering. -

This is incredible! Such passion and respect for your father. Having raised two sons myself, those are two things missing in many father/son relationships. A good father has earned the respect of his children. Wonderful poem! Love it! Thanks so much for entering it in my first contest.

awww...this was such an awesome poem. I absolutely loved it, and I'm sure your father would too. He's extremely lucky to have a son who loves him so much. Really, this would make him proud. <3
