The Locket Jesus Gave Me

Missing image

In shadows of yesterday

I saw a little girl
Playing with her doll

with brown flowing curls
Skipping her rope, to the tune

of London Bridge
Serving tea and crackers

and sneaking into the fridge

Kittens on her pillow

a teddy on the stand
I saw her on her knees

praying with folded hands
I can recall the prayer she said

just like it was today
It started with Dear Jesus –

just how are you today?

Then she said Dear Jesus

I just wanted you to know
That I do not blame you,

I know she had to go
I will miss my mommy

just as much as I miss you
I know she is in heaven

her life’s not really through

There is one thing I need to ask

before all things are said
My mommy left a locket

on the night stand by the bed
Can I keep it near to me,

to hold and love and touch?
It would mean the world to me

I loved her oh so much

When the prayer had ended

the locket began to glow
I know this to be true,

I was that girl years ago
And I still have that locket

that Jesus placed in my hand
In the shadows of yesterday,

as if it all was planned

  • Another beautiful poem! This one is very special because when my mother died I kept her gold locket. It has a picture of my mum and dad in and I treasure it because they're both gone. It was also special because it mentioned a little girl with brown hair and that seemed just like me. The line,
    'skipping her rope to the tune of London Bridge' was also very me as I spent much of my time with a rope or two rubber balls singing rhymes. So very moving also is the child's prayer;
'Dear Jesus just how are you today?'
We should all try to hang onto such child like trust and belief, as he did say 'and a little child will lead them...,'
    Beautiful!

This is so beautiful. The childlike essence of this inspiring poem brings to life the utter innocense of a child's heart and soul.

    Excellent, Sis
