Bed-Rested Phone Calls

Punching pin numbers and
social security forms
into radio waves and
microphones
doesn't really make a lot
of sense.

Peanut butter covered Oreos
and Goldfish
take up most of the
room in my refrigerator.
I always place them
right beside the
strand of used
Christmas lights
and empty Jelly containers.

(I'm not very neat
when it comes to those
kinds of things)

I tried dying my hair
a darker color
but I think it turned
out wrong.

Is it supposed to look
this way?

Stepping on old
needles my grandmother used
for sewing
doesn't hurt near as bad
as the reoccurring
pulse that starts in my
brain and floods
my skull.

I have the Chicken
Pox's
and an enormous appetite
for disputes.
I keep throwing up everything
I ate last night
and

I blame you for that.

"I never really liked
you."

I never really liked
you either.

Liar!

I hate Wednesdays.
They're so hard to spell
and even harder to keep
up with,
especially when my
Palm itches from the inside
out and I can't stop
scratching it.

That's your fault too.

You shouldn't have
touched me then.

I'm staying out of
work today.
I should have stayed out
yesterday but I
forgot about
being sick.
I meant to write it down.

(I forget things easily)

I'm writing your
name over and over again
until I forget it too.

But how can I

when it's written all
over my body?

All over.

I give up trying
to fail.
It's too hard,
too much work and
way-too-exhausting.

Despising you is so
much easier.

(isn't it?)

-no-

So I'm staying home today...

'cause the Flu is contagious.

Author notes

loving someone you hate sucks doesn't it?
Written August 12th, 2006

I wrote this a year ago, when I was 16. So maybe it isn't all that great, but it's about more than hats, flowers and rainbows.

like this blur of vivid images and details loosely webbed together... thinks it fits nicely with the whole flu thing and how your brain gets kind of fuzzy. disoriented, and yet it makes sense somehow and really develops the character and situation. i love how the speaker is sort of aware of the flawed logic and struggles with it a little before partly resigning to it, the restlessness. i think you have written about this very creatively, with many awesome, strong lines.

    "Peanut butter covered Oreos
    and Goldfish
    take up most of the
    room in my refrigerator."

    "I should have stayed out
    yesterday but I
    forgot about
    being sick.
I meant to write it down."

    "I hate Wednesdays.
    They're so hard to spell"

just a few of my favorites. a lot of it rung true and/or was strikingly clever. i didn't get what you were doing with the first stanza at all, and i felt the ending could be better, but otherwise this is quite well done and a delight to read!

I really don't know what to say.
I think this piece is -Amazing-
I especially like the beginning of the poem, as there was great imagery in lines such as :

    Stepping on old
    needles my grandmother used
    for sewing

This poem really shows the confusion of loving someone you hate, in a very clever way.

Thank you for entering and Good Luck!! =]

Love and hate, a bitter roller coaster ride. You expressed the confusion well, and I loved the conversational style you used. Congrats on your trophy in the Originality contest!

Wow, I thought this was incredibly clever. I can't even think of other words to describe it...just...very clever. I really, really liked this. It reminds me of Ani DiFranco songs, and I love Ani DiFranco songs more than many things that I can't even think of. I'm good at not being able to think of things, obviously. Well, excellent job on this piece and best of luck in the contest!
