A purple haze hung over the ruins of
the city. A place where millions once
lived, played, worked and loved.
They were the innocents who's only crime
was to be citizens of their country who lived
in this city.
They never knew the bomb had hit.
A bomb capable of killing thousands,
of millions more than once. These were
the lucky ones, the ones that died in that
blast.
Those who survived, who lived around the city,
they were the true victims.
Radiation poisoning, cancers, blindness, infertility,
birth of malformed children, dead or not living long,
hunger, lawlessness, poisoning of the land and waters.
These are the true gifts of a nuclear strike,
the gifts of a pre-emptive strike.
Can we really say that this is a "good idea",
a safe deterrent, or even idea to be entertained?
Isn't the mind that can conceive such a thing,
as dangerous as the one who conceives to use
such a weapon in the first place?

Author notes
I dedicate this poem to Uncle George Bush who belives that a pre-emptive strike against North Korea is a vivable alternative.

I don't agree with the content, but from a literary standpoint, you have presented a well-written, somewhat controversial piece that begs the reader to think.
well done -
Well... honestly poetry like this has really been getting on my nerves lately because it's all people seem to do. What the hell ever happened to rhyming in poetry??? Seriously. This "poem" is more like a simple blog against... omg... is that BUSH you're attacking??? That's a first. (Rest assure the previous statement was pure sarcasm.) Anywho... apart from the fact that I support Bush, I'm not sure you could even could this a poem. So I can pretty much tell you this won't win here. I will tell you that this was better than most of the bullshit I've got from this contest, even if I do completely disagree with the content.
Oh and by the way, your line:
"Can we really say that this is a "good idea",
Yes Amythest, I for one can really say that is a "good idea."

P.S. Thank you for following the one rule. -
Merry meet Rainbow,
Thank you for your applause and for commenting. I din't forget the emotional trauma of the victims left behind after a nuclear "event". I just felt that it would be awhile for the grief to come out since their first order of the day (so to speak) would be survival. The grief of losing a child or loved to cancer would be more intensely felt (at least in my humble opinion) than that of those killed in the blast it's self. Again, thank you for commenting and for the applause.

very strong piece with a very poignant question!
really liked this a lot--- -
this truely reflects what is going on in this present time. Good job and keep up the good work.

Your words ring of so much truth. Humanity is so off centered sometimes. Trying to undo, redo or even overdo. Scary.
Bravo on your well written write.
God's touch

yes the survivors are always the true victims. the horrendous damage of the after effects you have stated already but you forgot the emotional suffering inflicted as they realize they must continue to live life without the ones who died. it would be better they were dead.good job!
-
brilliant write that created a good image when read. It certainly fits well with the chosen title.
Thank you for sharing and good luck in the contest

I see you are antiwar and that in itself is a true 60's spirit. Peace man.

very thought provoking
I have to agree that this is the most excellent write I have ever read on the topic involving North Korea. I believe that our government could've done something a bit more humane, but those are politics. If they can't talk something out then they'll destroy it. I really like this piece a lot and I think it sheds a whole new light about what had happened and I think this is a heartfelt piece, because I wanted to cry after I read it. The world is sooo cruel....anyways, best of luck in the contest and I really, really, really, hope that this poem places or at the very least gets an Honorable Mention

This is a most excellent write and I like the way you used the title. You are not the only one afraid of the man with his itchy finger on the button. Best of luck in the contest. ~Jim

Well, Uncle George....I couldnt fit all that I would like to say about him in this comment box...and I would probably get lots of feedback lol, but your poem shows the reality from the victims points of view and it is brilliant!
TY for entering!
