Elmer looked at Simile and saw her cast her gaze downward. He tried to logically understand what had happened. His words had been well thought out and heartfelt. His love had been strong and real. Was this rejection? He stopped breathing and froze in position.
Deep within his solar plexus came a feeling, not an emotion proper, but an understanding that defied words. His speech had not missed its mark. His words were kicking the dust of a long dead and decomposed horse. He was just too stupid to realize.
Elmer tried to make sense of this and completely failed. Again, he froze and held his breath involuntarily. Again, a small and insignificant feeling began to well in his solar plexus. It also defied words, but if it had to be made into words, it would have said, "This is not the feeling."
Now, Elmer's panic was complete. What could, "This is not the feeling", possibly mean? Elmer refused to consider. He could not start breathing again. He believed he would pass out. He looked desperately to Simile for assistance, but she was staring at something far away and not of this Earth. Assistance was not forthcoming. Without realizing what or how, his soul tried to go where her eyes were looking.
He began to shiver. It was not the shiver of cold. It was not the shiver of fear. It was a shiver coming from the Earth itself. A shiver of understanding. It has already gotten a poetic response! Another poet is dissappointed because she wanted to reply first! Wow. Unexpected. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is beautiful and an amazing write...
If I were you, I would take this and add to it to create a story or a series of short stories! It is wonderful!
It leaves the reader loging for more...GREAT write!

Wondrously honest
To Elmer
from Simile
Would you follow me
to Silence --
would you still stay alive?
would you be brave enough
to let
me lead
and not give in to doubt?
Ah! there is a well
-- soul's Silence --
it softly gurgles Life.
There is a small vast Island
that wrought itself
from strife.
Would you be my companion
and let me guide you there?
Would you? Would you be brave enough
to share
my tender care?
