Many times the question has been posed to me
Why do I devote my life to the study of history?
For all many see is a collection of facts and dates
They can find no truth to which they can relate
But those who understand the price of perception
Know how easily history can be used for deception
For the only way to beat a lie is to fight it
The only way to find truth is to be the one to write it
Hitler and Stalin knew history's power well
Infused with hatred born from the pit of Hell
They took history and molded it like clay
Until lies became truth, and darkness ruled the day
All of our conceptions are born in the past
Formed by men with agendas down to the last
It is always the victor that describes the war
Only thee winner records the game's final score
That is why our duty is to test what we believe
So that we will not join the many who let complacency deceive
For truth fears not the challenge of the open mind
It will withstand all arguments the intellect can find
As you examine the history of any nation
You may find its enemies are of its own creation
And all those people we worship as mini- gods
Are revealed to be mere humans with dark and hidden flaws
I am no cynic painting a reality so stark
But our past is a tapestry woven of light and dark
And by all who are wise this will be conceded
Those mistakes that remain undiscovered are too easily repeated

This is awesum...I GET IT even if you were DQ for petty reasons... WRITE ONN!!!
Those who fail to learn histories lessons are DOOMED to repeat them...
I am neither an optimist or pessimist... REALITY is borne from histories past...
We may be THROUGH with the past...but the PAST may not be through with us..

Well done! I enjoyed your rhyming and the message of the poem... I am not a huge fan of studying history, but your poem made it sound interesting and I liked reading it. Sadly, though, I have to DQ you from the contest. Rule 3 states you must have the quote you used in your author's comments. It is very clear. I can't tell which quote you used so I am unable to keep this as qualifying for the contest. I do apologize and appreciate your efforts

We will repeat history if we don't learn from our past mistakes.
