My Father's Lessons

To a young girl they didn't mean much,
they were just some silly old words.
Made up tales, quips and silly stuff,
But somehow they carried over and were heard.

"Treat people in kindness" he'd say,
I'd roll my eyes at him, silly man.
"Those words ain't cool today."
"Angie, one day you'll understand."

"What would Jesus do?" he'd ask.
"Daddy, you're so old!"
He'd tell me I was naive, learn how to act.
Stop trying to be so grown, you got a lot to know!

I wish I had stopped retorting back,
and just heard all of his wisdom.
He died of a heart attack,
and he said that I was always forgiven.

My dad's words are written on my soul,
they carry with my in my days.
They impacted me more than I would know,
all because of what he had to say.

Author notes

This piece is about my adopted dad Ron. I used to fight him during my teens saying he was uncool and that he did not know me. Truth is, I think he did. The picture is of me, age 19. Dedicated in memory to Ronald Casper 12-13-99, I suppose option 12, could fit here, that sometimes what "we" don't see or understand is a persons way of saying " I love you".
Love ya daddy, all rights belong to theroseislovely.

that was short sweet and wonderful.
You loved your father so much, i wish i could have those feelings for mine, but i have some serious issues that cannot be changed.
You may have felt the sorrow a day too late, but you felt it reguardless, which means you loved him!
    This is fairly recent, so...
if you wish i have a poem called "Atonement" I put it on my loved ones' coffins during the funeral, you might want to do the same.
Thank you for reading my babbling, I hope your feeling better and that you listen to his wise words now.
