Where have all the Children gone

Early one morning as I sit on my front porch. Enjoying the fresh air of an early summer day. Suddenly I could feel the quietness that had crept into my Spirit. It was as if something had taken over my body. I could not understand why I could not hear a sound of anykind. I looked to my left and then to my right I saw one car passing by and could hear the hum of its motor. Soon it was out of my sight as the sound faded I could no longer see or hear it. Every thing was so still so deafening still. I started looking around again just then I realized there were no Children on the street. Thats when the thought came to me, Where have all the Children gone.  My mind began to wonder back so many years ago. I remembered as a small boy playing in our front yard, You could look to the left or right every way you turned you could see Children playing running Hopping, skipping jumping rope, some were laughing some crying, some happy some sad. the most important thing. There were Children. But like many things in life most Children are just taken forgranted untill one day you start to look around and they are nolonger there. Then a devistating thought ran cross my mind. What if there were no more Children? Then I tried to visualise not only the streets of America but around the world. Empty streets no laughter no crying no running and playing , no Children just silence all over the world. Then I thought no Impossible It could not happen, Or could it? As I sat there on my front porch I thought of the time when I first came to the Big City. The world was at War "World War Two" People all over the world were dying by the thousands every day. It was as if the Countries of the world had just chosen up sides  and were playing a game and the game would not be over untill one side had destroyed the other.Soon it was over the developement of the Atomic Bomb and the dropping of only two on two cities and the destruction there of. Yes, the War was over. Men and women began to return to their own countries and homes. Many who had not seen their husbands and Wives and families for some times some for years. Then began what is now called the Baby boomer erea. With in a few years the Country seemed to be back to normal. Every where you looked in the cities the suburbs in the countries Children were every where. The economy began to grow there seemed to be money everywhere. Housing developments spring up all over the Country. The more the housing the more Babies
. As the children began to grow up Soon the Parks and receration areas were filled with young Children, running skipping hopping and playing. A war that had caused death and devistation had spawned a new erea
. A new way of life and excitement. Expanded Education new scientific discoveries, new causes new movements, Abortion rights Social Services Planned parenthood
, Evolutionist Reveloutionist,Wellfare Goverment intervention, Sexual revolution, I remember when the Churches were filled to over flow on Sunday. but now they have dwindled down to where many churches have resorted to what many consider Imoral and unethical ways such as gambling Bingo lotteries commerical ways not only to lure people to fill the Pews but to fill their coffers. morality had lost it's values. Sex had filled the airways through Television Radios the Theaters Books Videos all disguised under the so called freedom Acts Freedom of speach Freedom of the press Freedom to know freedom to kill by way of Abortion, all these plus many more. in my personal opinion contributed substanchilly to the decline of the Birth of new babies. When morality drops Crime rises robberies Murder Kidnappings Terroism. Soon the beautiful Parks and receration areas that was once filled with happy Parents and Children walking running playing enjoying themselves and the pleasure of other people just out for a beautiful day in the Park. No longer can anyone feel free to enjoy all those wonderful things. Because now the Parks are filled with Radicals Misfits criminals punks who would split your head with a baseball bat or slit your throat with a razor or knife for a dollar or as they say just for the fun of it. Soon there were no Children in the Parks even Adults were afraid to walk through the Parks at night. Soon it became necessary to own some type of Automobile you could roll up yhe windows and lock the doors and then maby just maby you would be lucky enough to cross town after dark. It was mind boggling just to sit on your front porch and think of these things. Then I remembered a little boy next door his ball bounced over the fence and rolled under a car by the curb  he ran looking for his ball I saw him run between the cars I heard a loud screech and a scream I ran to the street there on the ground lay the little boy clutching his ball luckilly he was not hurt. his Mom came running out and saw he was alright except for being scared . As she walked him back to the house I heard her say dont you ever go out in that street again for any reason, then I remembered a few days later a little Girl was abducted from her front yard she was found a few days later murdered and sexually assulted the community was devestated . An hour or so later I was still setting on my front porch I heard a noise a little girl about five or six year old had walked out on her front porch, Then i heard her Mother yell dont you go off that porch then yelled just get your self back in this house. Her Mother came out took her by the hand and walked her back in the house.  If you listen very carefully you could hear the key turn in the lock I could just imagine the thoughts that filled that Mothers mind. Now you will be safe locked in the house with me. " Or would she "  Then I knew the answer to the thought that came to me earlier  WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHILDREN GONE?

This poem reminded me of the film "Children of men". I liked the poem, and the way it had so much insight, but I have to say i disagree with much of the sentiment given. Often in life it is so easy to look back on the past with rose-tinted spectacles, wishing things were the way they were, back when life was so much simpler, but change happens, always has and always will. We can either embrace this fact or get left behind, and thus trapping ourselves in some sort of sinacal microcosm of yearning for yesterday's comforts. Anyway, thanks for entering, and all the best.

    Excellent

BRAVO, excellent write. I can remember when I was a child(many years ago) we all played outside in the backyard mostly, but sometimes in the front yard. We too had a nice front porch to sit upon. We could even play out after dark as my parents usually sat on the front porch in the summer months. (no TV then)But anyway this piece if filled with imagery and is well written. I agree with what you have written. It isn't safe in our own homes as people have had the front doors knocked down and attacked and some of them killed. Continue writing.
