Nothing But A Thief

For that one moment of dawning, my whole world turned to stone,
A million voices screamed to me, but I’d never felt so alone,

"Take the money, fool, just take it, not a soul will ever know,
Take the money, fool, just take it, take the money and go,"

"You’ll never do that, my fool, though the world is covered in fog,
In darkest times, you’ll never steal, you’re a lady, not a dog,"

“Why me, why me, why me?” in desperation I cried,
A storm of right and wrong, raging enemies inside,

"Take the money, take the money, be filled with wishes galore,"
Screaming million voices filled my head, good and evil at war,

I tried to move and think, but I was petrified in time,
Afraid of being poor again, afraid of this camouflaged crime,

The whole world still oblivious, it wouldn’t stop for long,
No choice was not an option, no choice meant choose the wrong

Oblivious to my inner war, he would never understand,
“Have a nice day” the clerk smiled, as the money reached my hand,

I took the money that wasn’t mine, I chose the evil way,
Now I’m a liar, a thief, no matter what I say,

Guilt will encompass me daily, my life is now deformed,
Once so young, so innocent, my life has been transformed,

I once was young and innocent, I never knew how to lie,
But now I’m nothing but a thief, a thief til the day I die.

Author notes

“The check that you are cashing is for $359.00 and the clerk gives you back $539.00 by mistake............”

This is an entry for the contest '$359 or $539??' by Leance.

I’m not saying this is what I would do if I was in that situation. I think I would just self combust - I'm not that spectacular at making split second decisions.

Yes, our own consciences do tell us a lot. Thanks for the comment. Have fun with the rest of the judging!

The inner turmoil we put ourselves through.......we never really need any criticism from others as we know right from wrong and somewhere beyond our childhood.....we learn to be deceitful........
Thank you for entering and best of luck.......
