I wake, look out the window, on my face the cool morning air feels so wonderful
As I look across the yard the dew sparkles like the stars at night
Reflecting the sun's like giving light
I hear a noise, I look around only to see
Five deer running, only the white of their tails facing toward me
I rub my eyes as I walk out into the kitchen
Mom turns, smiles at me, says sit down breakfast is about to begin
Hot oatmeal, toast, scrambled eggs, everything is yummy to me
I gobble everything down, can't wait to go outside, the woods I want to see
As I step from the table mom hands me my lunch, two sandwiches, an apple for later in the day
I am singing as I walk out the door, I'm on my way
Across the yard, up the hill among the trees
I say to myself, theres no place I'd rather be
My friend, a young bunny runs from beneath my feet
He doesn't run far, he knows me for every morning we meet
Farther up the hill, deeper in the woods I see
Robins, blue jays, cardinals, bluebirds
Their songs they sing each different yet the most beautiful I have ever heard
There, a porcupine, him I seldom see
I keep a safe distance between him and me
I jump in my shoes, I flushed out a grouse
Their wings beating loudly even though I had been quiet as a mouse
I get up the hill, I love to look on the valley far below
I see the cars on the road, there three miles away as flys the crow
I see the school I went to through the six grade
I sat down, my back against a tree, I dose in its cool shade
I am startled awake, there ten feet from me a doe and her fawn
I sat up stretched, stifled a big yawn
The mother deer sees me, her and her baby trot away
Not really scared just a little wary
I get up, walk farther into the woods, playing along the way
I am heading for that spring, anticipation of cold water running over my dangling feet
I see the spring and the ravine the water has made hoping that flying squirrel I will meet
Around the spring is a large group of pines
I feel the cones crunch under my feet, as through their branches the suns speckeled rays shine
I look at the ground, I see bear droppings, I look around
Them I do not want to meet so I don't make any sounds
The water is cold but in the little stream I see
Little tadpoles, minnows, they are curious to me
I am amazed as I watch them darting here and there
I am sure they think me strange as I sit and stare
I look up, the sun is getting low
There are long shadows in the valley below
I start out through the woods, back down the hill
Suddenly I realize I am not alone, I see a fox a few feet away, oh what a thrill
He is so beautiful with his bright red coat
I am all smiles as I stop to gloat
Today has been a little different from the rest
For now I look up and see an eagle sitting beside its nest
They are not common here so I stop, watch, I am very lucky this day
A picture of him sitting there will in my memory forever stay
I walk on, the darkness is setting in
The night animals and sounds are about to begin
I come out of the woods, start across the yard, I see mom standing outside waiting for me
I get to her, she scolds me, I scared her you see
I then tell her of my day, the animals I saw as I walked around
She then smiles, looks at me and says, today God's beauty you have found
Author notes
I know this is a very long poem, I went into a little more detail of another day of my trips into the woods. Sonja, this memory of mine is for you and if I may I would like to share this with another very dear friend of mine, Sapphire. Both of you have such a beautiful way of seeing natures beauty around you. I pray that this journey down memory lane will bring to both of you a little peace and joy.

I thought you might like a journey out in a place which was so dear to me, it was so stress free and carefree in those woods, and the animals that I talk about I really did see almost everyday. At the top of the hill I would sit down and relax for I could really see about four miles away. I am so glad that you liked it.

To bring to you a little joy and relaxation makes my day very happy and good. You and I share a sense of the beauty we see around us everyday and to be able to write of my experiences and to have someone actually care and know how I felt on these days means the world to me. My other dear friend Sonja is so much like us, she always writes of the beauty around her in her native Croatia, she writes from her heart and has so many beautiful and touching poems, you must really go to her page and read some, you will come away feeling so much better for having stopped by.

Kevin, my dear, sweet, wonderful friend.
You have done it again with your wonderful writing and those magical memories
Every word of this poem reminded me so much of my own childhood in so many ways. Although I was not surrounded by forest animals I was surrounded by farm animals and other native animals. We would get large mobs of kangaroos coming through the property in the early mornings and at sunset. Your trip to the stream much reminded me of a natural spring we would go to as children. There was a rock pool there we would swim in.
You should consider writing these poems into longer stories and publishing them as a childrens books. A lot of children would be fascinated to hear about all the wonders of nature that many do not even get the chance to see.
Your poem has made me smile today, something that I haven't had much opportunity to do lately.
Thank you for sharing yet another of your beautiful and special memories with us

Yes dear friend, I spent almost everyday during school summer break in those woods, the animals got to know me and would not run from me, I could not pet them but they would not run either, I could almost walk among them, the deer, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and so much more. I apprciate your sweet words so very much.

Beautiful
What a beautiful day, spent with all the animals and birds. Wouldn't it be nice to have a perch up in the tree and be able to see a lot more of the woods and it's creatures. -
My day has been made to see you happy, I could always feel that you were able to not only understand my inner most feelings of these days gone by but you could see that my heart will always remember these days with love and beauty.
You should take the time to read Sapphires poems for she feels and thinks so much like you and me, in our conversations we have talked so much of our younger days out playing in nature, her in her native Austraila and me in my home in Pennsylvania, we have shared so much of those days so different yet in many ways the same. I actually wrote this at the laundry mat yesterday and finished it up while sitting outside at a small park in town we call the gazeebo, while there I saw many different birds, so these memories came back so easily to me.
-
This is much more than beatifull Kevin, full of great nature pictures that takes my breath away. Thank you my dear friend. This poem reminds me on amazing cartoon Bambi, but with a great different. There people were not positive but you with your presence in their lifes was able to show that love and comunication between man and animal could exist. Thanks once again for evening tears because of your potic beauty. I will put this poem between my featured.

My dear sweet friend, I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart, last week I said to both Sonja and Sapphire that I would write something for them, they seem so much like me when it comes to seeing the beauty of nature around us that I wanted to bring to them and all of you yet another day back when I was just a little boy.
