The Key

Missing image

She appeared upon life's silver wings
in days of ancient moons and suns
a time when angels danced and sang
among white fields of crocuses.

I had known her in those days,
we were young and had the time
to spend on wonders free and small
protected under god-filled clouds.

They were patient with us then-
bending to our impudence,
knowing that quickly time would pass
and our place with them would come at last.

My arrival just predated hers
cares and sorrows greeted me.
I'd turn back to her freedom there
in quiet moments, remembering.

She soon arrived, so full of life
much the same as she always was-
in her hands I placed a key
wrapped in her future destiny...

Deep inlayed were inscribed these words
carved with skilled and caring hands:
"To the angel Di, of many names
for Happy Twenty-First Birthday."

Just those words, that’s all it said,
that’s all it will ever need to say;
for it says so much that isn't said-
that we are together here today.
