The World Is A Lie

The world is a lie and it kills the best in us
indiscriminately without any remorse.
We judge each other betraying every trust,
so superior in every respect, of course.

We blabber unconvincingly about ideals
discarded when they conflict with desires.
And every commitment we break reveals
we are little more than self-serving liars.

I feel nothing now but murder in the air,
and I fear the motives in men’s hearts.
We make a great show of how we care
but are the first to leave if trouble starts.

All manners and ritual, it leaves me cold
and desperate for something to believe.
I do not believe a single thing I am told;
the world is a lie, it will only deceive.

    Superb

    I regard you as a talented poet who is prepared to tell the ugly truth without dressing it in "borrowed robes". The conflict between desires(selfish) and ideals(unselfish) will always be won by the former since that is the way of self-centred society so filled with hypocrisy but never willing to trade selfishness for selflessness. You are so right - we support anything noble as long as it presents little trouble to us. What impressed me the most, apart from your integrity, was your ability to state the brutal truths in rhyme that never threatened to capitulate into artificiality. camus
