How Soon America Forgets

Some people complain
About why we are in Iraq
How soon America forgets
What happened way back

It wasn't long ago
That those two towers fell
You saw flags outside everywhere
However many could foretell

They could see what would occur
It had time and time before
America loses sight of
Everything we're fighting for

Fighting for our freedom
So we aren't ever brought down
This nation we have fought to keep
Every state, county, and town

Who cares why we're fighting
It never was about that
Some people just hate the fact
That we are still in Iraq

I don't understand
People say I'm too young
But if you ask me
It never made sense to anyone

They don't have a point to argue
They haven't heard the story
Because all I ever asked
Was for our troops to get some glory

While they are off fighting
We're living our lives
Nothing else will happen soon
We say to our children and wives

But turn on your Television
And watch the news
People die everyday
Fighting for you

For your rights and freedoms
They put their lives on the line
To keep this country alive
To protect the great design

So while you sleep think about this
Our country was founded on Liberty
For justice and honor
To keep people like us free

The ones who protect us
Are one of our own
In every town and neighborhood
They are widely known

Give them the honor
And respect they earn
And pray every night
For their safe return

Author notes

I live with a very military family and this piece was all because of everything I hear. You should hear me argue my point in my Global 10 class. Most people can't understand why we are doing what we are doing. Is it ever really about that...the fact remains that we are too busy thinking about why we are fighting that we forget that supporting our troops is so much more important. I thought that this was a lovely contest and I was able to express my opinions, and it was good for me. Thanks Guys!

    Must read

You are very wise for one so young, I love this poem and it touches my heart, If people ask you why we are here in Iraq answer them this, Do you want them(the insurgents) to come to America and set up road side bombs. Do you want a thousand suiside bombers on the streets of America. Well if they are not in Iraq they would go somewhere. God bless you and thanks for making me feel proud, Well Done.

If we wanted to get back at the guys who blew up the twin towers, we'd be spending more time hunting down Al-Qaeda. Instead, we're sending soldiers over to die. We're making enemies and our corporate pals are making money.

I support the fucking troops. But that doesn't mean I have to support the reason why they're over there. I just hope they don't get killed by shrapnel bombs. You guys are ridiculous.

All that aside, I think the poem is well written.

I have never support WAR! I am a child of the Vietnam era. I lost a cousin over there, and a brother survived. I have a nephew in Iraq as we speak. I love him, and pray for his safe-keeping, as well as the safety of ALL our men and women in this war. I agree wholeheartedly that we must support our troops, although I detest the killing. I honestly wish there was a resolve that never enlisted death.

Your poem is expertly written ,and reminds us that sometimes war is inevitable. The Bible even says that "there are times for war".

    Excellent musing!

I wish you the best in this contest.

Much LOVE & Many Blessings ♥

This is undoubtedly well written and I like the fact that you chose to stick to the positive side of support rather than negativity.I am one of the few who do not support the war in Iraq but I do respect, honour and value the soldiers who are there. It is right to question why we are there, the reason intitially was given as WMD were meant to be present.None were found. The next reason was to stabilize the political system and over see the elections. This has not worked.I have written my own tribute poetry to the soldiers in the past so please do not misunderstand me.I wish the politicians never sent our soldiers there and wish they got help for PTSD upon their return, sadly the soldiers are but serving their countries and lay their lives on the line, some return alive but affected, some return disabled for life and some do not return to their families. No politician suffers from PTSD and they don't reveal who has shares in armament firms, construction firms and oil.Good luck in the contest

A TRULY INSPIRATIONAL AND BEAUTIFUL POEM

I agree with you whole-heartedly, we are fighting for others freedom but isn't that what people should do for others in this world? If we dont' no one else will.

Thanks... it is like I am getting an extended education. You wouldn't believe how many people think differently where I live(Nowhere near millitary anything). My parents always tell me that once you live in that environment, and if you ask anyone who does, well they have a different way of thinking. I think it is important to be supportive! And I am super glad that you liked it and I could share it with you!
