Sparkling brown eyes
smiled at me while
sweeping me onto the dance floor
Shorts and a t-shirt as alluring
as a princess dress
We were brand-new
like a prize-winning invention
the pieces fit, on the first try
from the first hand-clasp
to the gentle waltz
We weren't old, just classic
Steps lovers took through the years
Channeled through our minds
Unconsciously repeating, causing
love at first step
The song crescendoed
or so they say
I only heard the music in my head
Your heartbeat
was the metronome
Several years later,
you asked me,
"Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?"
I wish I'd said yes,
even now, I wish for just one more dance.
"I'll always remember that magic moment"
Sweeping me off my feet under the stars
for that perfect first kiss
I just wish our last dance would have been,
"Could I have this dance?"
Author notes
"La Fleurs sur la niege"
This poem was inspired by the Anne Murray song, Could I Have This Dance?
The first time I danced with my first boyfriend, I knew that I would fall in love with him. This is an attempt to recapture the feelings I had that first night.
