I feel the car pull up silently
and my body stirs a little
"Are we there yet?" I ask him
"Yes, don't forget the flowers dear." he replies as the trunk pops
I grab the beautiful lily's and stand beside him
"Do you mind if I go say hi to them?" pointing towards the others
"No, Lauren go ahead they're family."
He walks over to the sacred ground
reserved only for an angel like her
after I hug him and say, "Be back in a few."
I tell them hello, give them a brief life update
and kiss their coffins goodbye
Turning around I hear a muffled cry
almost like a child's
realizing then that its from a man
someone I look at with loving eyes
who has been so brave and strong
but today I am seeing himself
he is little and so scared
scared of being left all alone
with no one to love
the way she did
so honestly, so completely
I want to run towards him
but instead tread lightly
and circle my arms around his shoulders
"Come on grandpa lets go home.
She knows you love and miss her."
With that he dries his eyes
looks at her name again and kisses it gently
but love in it so full
that if she were alive
she'd be smiling more than she already is
up in those pearly gates
Turning around we head for the car
and go on home
to look at her pictures
including the one
where she's standing beside her future "kiss" site
Author notes
This is about my grandma and grandpa. They were married for 52 years before cancer took her away. He misses her everyday and so do I.
