Our Dagger of Greed

The sun grimaces at the scene he grudgingly lights,
The winds gasp, disapprovingly bearing witness to man’s cruelty,
The trees shudder and look away from the intolerable sights,
The waters ripple, frothing uneasily as mankind’s greed stirs its depths,
Mother Nature grieves and weeps within herself,
As she watches her beloved creatures,
Vanish in humanity’s gluttonous grasps…

The vulnerable tusked giants bellow in fury,
Trumpeting an innocent, unheard plea,
Imploring mankind to cease murder,
To attain glinting tusks of ivory…

The slithering reptiles hiss menacingly,
Lidless slits of eyes flickering in rage,
Warning the cold-blooded human race,
To hinder its desire for exquisite skins,
Of hazardous colors, patches, and stripes…

The fur coated wolves snarl and cower in fear,
As the eerie, ominous silhouette advances upon them,
Gun slung precariously off one shoulder,
Howls penetrate midnight’s awkward silence,
Sly grins contorting into bared teeth,
Against the most vicious of predators to roam our world,
Monstrous, stone-hearted thieves…

Unknowing animals cringe, terrified,
At the mere sight of the dominant humanity,
For he seizes advantage of their defenseless souls,
Snatches away for his own selfish purposes,
Their most valuable possession,
Their precious bounty from God,
One factor that is undoubtedly theirs,
As much as it is ours…
The life we humans mercilessly draw from deep within them,
With a single stab from our dagger of intense greed…

Thanks for your comment! Good thing your horse was rescued... that man must have been heartless if he was ready to send the poor thing to slaughter. Oh well, I guess not all people feel for animals the way I do. Thanks.

Lovely, and chilling. Well penned... I currently have a horse that was rescued from a man about to send him to slaughter. The thought of that happening to him, or any other, leaves me speechless. This was a great poem, well thought out.

Right, of course... everyone has a different way to phrase things and present poetry. I don't mind you not liking my style, but do appreciate your taking the time to leave a comment!

I can tell you really feel strongly about this subject, and it's good to be passionate. I just didn't care for the way in which it was presented, I think you could have tinkered with it a little more to improve the flow, etc. Pretty good.

LOL, I hate my glasses... when I started wearing them, my eyesight was pretty close to perfect, but since then, each year it declines considerably. Thanks once again for the comment... glad you found this worth it!

    Excellent

Hi Julia, I had to re-read this one again. Found it so interesting. You have such wonderful thoughts about things, you bring out the clarity of each expressed feeling so very well. At your age, I was still playing with toy trucks! (I was soon to discover life and girls! LOL. Keep up the wonderful writing; poetry and poets are really ageless...don't ya know? Our intellects, whether 70 or 7 still have the ageless majesty of creation...merely awaiting the moment when it surfaces to the top of our "brain" so to speak, and finds it's way onto the printed page or computer screen! Keep writing, my young friend, you have a lifetime of self expression ahead of you...as for laser surgery when 18, forget it...wear the glasses...you will look intelligent. Walt.

I loved this. It's such an important message! Great use of imagery, I loved the idea of "Mother Nature grieves and weeps within herself". Quite appropriate considering..
    Beautiful meaningful write!

Wonderful...what more can be said? I too share your point of view concerning our lack of caring about animals. Seems as though we, as humans, tend to use up all of nature's resources and quickly. Minerals, oil, animals, each other...! A very nice write. I agree with all the others who have commented. Your talent looms large still. Turtledove.

Thanks Cameron! Good to know you're still interested in reading my stuff I think it centers more on mankind and his greed... but yeah, that greed is for animal fur, skin, tusk, etc. here so it does have to do with animals
I was so busy lately I didn't have time to write anything. It's summer break now so there's tons of time to write! I'll be posting more poems up soon... once I have enough comments on this one! I've written another few but they're kinda... weird... I might post them up anyways!
Thanks again for the comment and applause!

very poetic. That sounds like sort of a "duh" statement on a poetry site but you'f be surprised how many poems are NOT poetic. As for the subject matter; it's all true and I couldn't agree more. Humanity as a whole needs to achieve balance or nature will remove us from the very balance we upset...
